Job summary

Tampa Electric Company seeks a Line Clearance Arborist to oversee contracted vegetation clearance for transmission and distribution systems. You will coordinate daily activities, manage contractor performance, budgets, and regulatory compliance to ensure safe, reliable service.

Required: high school diploma or GED, ISA/Utility certification, 3+ years in vegetation management with leadership experience. Preference for forestry-related degree and state herbicide license.

Qualifications

• Minimum 3 years of utility line clearance and vegetation management experience.
• Experience leading multiple tree trimming crews in a utility environment.
• Knowledge of environmental, regulatory and arborist compliance requirements.

Responsibilities

• Coordinate daily planning and monitoring of line clearance and vegetation management activities with contractors.
• Review work orders, prepare specifications, select contractors, and manage permitting interactions with engineering and environmental teams.
• Monitor work units, hours and costs; verify contractor invoices weekly for labor and equipment reporting.
• Stay updated on regulatory requirements (NERC, FERC, SERC, FPSC) for safety and reliability.
• Coordinate transmission right-of-way mowing, scheduling, budgeting, and contractor evaluations.
• Oversee herbicide application programs, including specifications and budget monitoring.

Storm Duty Requirements

Tampa Electric and its sister companies serve a role in providing critical services to our community during an emergency. Team members are required to participate in the response/recovery activities related to emergencies/disasters to maintain service to our Tampa Electric customers. Team members are required to work in their normal job duties or other assigned activities. Proper compensation will be made in accordance with the company's rules and procedures.

POSITION CONCEPT

The Line Clearance Arborist will oversee and coordinate contracted line clearance activities associated with the construction and maintenance of Tampa Electric Company’s (TEC) transmission and distribution systems. Responsibilities include the daily coordination of clearing for new construction, transmission and distribution maintenance activities and the transmission mowing and herbicide application programs.

PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

• Coordinate the daily planning and monitoring of the activities associated with the contracting of line clearance and vegetation management activities. (30%)
• Preview work orders and evaluate line clearance needs associated with project management jobs, including the development of specifications, contractor selection, providing permit information to engineering and environmental departments, interfacing with TEC project leaders and subsequent coordination of the clearing, tree trimming and restoration activities through to the completion of the construction. Participation also includes community meetings and other public awareness events in support of the project.(20%)
• Monitor circuit completion, including work units, man-hours and costs, including entry of data into the appropriate databases.Verify contractor and vendor invoices weekly for accuracy of reporting labor and equipment hours and rates. (10%)
• Remain updated on environmental, safety, regulatory and arborist requirements to ensure TEC compliance with regulations for both the maintenance of existing and in the clearing for new construction of the transmission and distribution system. (10%)
• Maintain department operational compliance with NERC, FERC, SERC and Florida Public Service Commission (FPSC) regulatory requirements governing line clearance and inspections; all of which support public safety and electric system reliability. (10%)
• Coordinate transmission right-of-way mowing activities, including development of specifications, work scheduling, budget monitoring, and contractor quality and productivity evaluations. (10%)
• Administertransmission and distribution herbicide application programs, including development of specifications, selection of appropriate chemical formulations, work scheduling, budget monitoring and reviewing contractorquality. (10%)

SUPERVISION

Indirect: Oversight of line clearance contracted employees, including quality, safety, and productivity and serve as the liaison between TEC and contractors to assist in the resolution of daily concerns.

RELATIONSHIPS

Internal: Interacts with all levels of employees in Energy Delivery (including Planning & Scheduling, System Service, Distribution & Transmission Engineering, Project Management, Joint Use, Lighting, and others). Interactions with departments external to ED include Community Affairs, Customer Service, Regulatory, Real Estate, Contracts, Environmental and Telecommunications.

External: External to Tampa Electric, interacts with Customers and representatives from local government and municipalities for the purposes of work completion. Interact and manage all levels of contract personnel for planning daily operations and scheduling of crews for transmission and distribution maintenance and construction work and related right-of-way maintenance.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education

Required: High School Diploma or GED.

Preferred: Bachelor of Science Degree in Forestry, Horticulture or directly related field from an accredited university

Certification/Licenses

Required: International Society of Arboriculture (“ISA”) Arborist or Utility Specialist certification is required or must be obtained within one year of starting the position

Preferred: State of Florida ROW herbicide applicator license

Experience

Required: Minimum 3 y ears of related work experience in utility line clearance and vegetation mangement. Experience must include 1 year of leading multiple tree trimming crews in a utility environment.

Bachelors degree in Forestry, Horticulture or directly related field may be considered in lieu of some comparable related experience.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities

Required: Must have a sound knowledge of line clearance, vegetation managementand related environmental, regulatory and arborist compliance requirements

Must have demonstrated strong leadership, verbal and written communication skills and an aptitude to work proficiently in the other dimensions noted below.

WORK CONDITIONS

Must be able to work overtime as required and be available for emergency call-out to support electric service restoration.
