The Site Head Lilly Gateway Labs (LGL), Philadelphia provides leadership strategic oversight to the site and associated portfolio companies. This role is part of the Lilly Gateway Labs team, the broader Lilly community in Philadelphia as well as the east coast, and the local entrepreneurial and academic life science communities to fosters innovation and deep scientific/drug development. Importantly, this role leverages expertise to build, grow, and accelerate opportunities into the Lilly portfolio through collaboration with Catalyze360 and with therapeutic area leadership & business development.

This individual will be accountable for strategic oversite of the Philadelphia LGL site, maintenance of the site budget, and operational engagement. He/she needs to be able to leverage a demonstrated and thorough understanding of drug discovery/development and emerging technologies to identify potential community members and engage community companies to help solve scientific, strategic, and operational challenges to accelerate their innovation towards the clinic. The individual will play a critical role in establishing and maintaining relationships with identified companies that have assets and platforms that are both on and adjacent to current Lilly scientific strategy. The role will work closely with regional head and LGL peers across geographies to holistically manage the Lilly Gateway Labs portfolio of External Innovation and have broad interactions with the Ventures and ExploR&D teams.

The role will influence senior leadership, and/or external partners on business and technical decisions that have a critical impact on business direction and company selection. The individual will drive positive exchange across the drug discovery & development value chain by removing barriers to execution and advancement of innovation.

Functional & Technical Expertise
  • Recognized as a drug discovery &/or development expert
  • Possesses an established network(s): within Lilly, the local ecosystem, and other industry-related communities
  • Ability to make independent decisions and navigate ambiguity
  • Applies rigor in the oversight and execution of company selection, and curation of deal flow.
  • Continually evaluates opportunities for the LGL portfolio at the both the company and scientific trends levels (on strategy & forward-looking opportunities of where science is breaking)
  • Applied knowledge of project and portfolio management (e.g. management of integration, scope, time, cost, quality, human resources, communications)
  • Extensive experience in driving projects and portfolio advancement via clear and succinct communication to all levels within and external to the organization
Influence
  • Leads and influences innovative thinking, decision-making, integration for new targets, molecules, platforms, capabilities across Lilly therapeutic areas of focus & adjacent science.
  • Ability to present a unified face to potential external partners, the individual will possess a knowledge of Lilly’s ongoing efforts and be able to build and bring existing relationships together to ensure alignment
  • The individual will play an integral role in fostering and maturing relationships with both internal and external partners (including biotechs, venture funds, local serial entrepreneurs, and academic institutions) thereby influencing senior leadership within Lilly and in the local community for community member identification, event creation/hosting, and sponsorship of local initiatives to create brand awareness and demonstrate Lilly values
  • Ensure integration into broader US strategy through rigorous goal setting, effective teamwork, performance management, & collaboration with Lilly groups. A key component of the role involves identifying and shaping new projects with companies and connecting them directly to internal drug discovery teams as well as securing leadership buy-in and funding to advance these to value inflection points that drive decision making.
Leadership
  • Responsible for maintaining a portfolio of companies that will be housed in Lilly Gateway Labs Philadelphia. These companies will provide a sustainable flow of innovation to the therapeutic area portfolios (50%) as well as adjacent opportunities (50%).
  • Fosters a collaborative environment between Lilly Research Labs and those companies in the LGL innovation hubs. Examples: 1) symposia from specific topics e.g. regulatory or business development 2) facilitates connecting companies internally with key technical areas.
  • Focus on excellence in science and people, and a culture based on leadership and teamwork that creates a work climate and culture exemplifying Lilly values.
  • Coach and mentor team members, including performance management and career planning and development.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills; able to develop credibility in a network that spans components inside and outside of the company.
  • Experience handling sensitive & confidential data
  • Excellent self-management and organizational skills; able to independently manage workload, set personal and team priorities and adjust as needed.
  • Strong interpersonal and teambuilding skills; able to create a shared vision and productively manage conflict between team members and diverse perspectives

Minimum Requirements
  • Graduate degree (PhD, MD, MBA)
  • 8+ years of pharmaceutical, biotech, or VC experience
  • Extensive experience with the biotech ecosystem
  • Experience with search and evaluate &/or business development

Actual compensation will depend on a candidate’s education, experience, skills, and geographic location. The anticipated wage for this position is $162,000 - $237,600. Full-time equivalent employees also will be eligible for a company bonus (depending, in part, on company and individual performance). In addition, Lilly offers a comprehensive benefit program to eligible employees, including eligibility to participate in a company-sponsored 401(k); pension; vacation benefits; eligibility for medical, dental, vision and prescription drug benefits; flexible benefits (e.g., healthcare and/or dependent day care flexible spending accounts); life insurance and death benefits; certain time off and leave of absence benefits; and well-being benefits (e.g., employee assistance program, fitness benefits, and employee clubs and activities).
