Job description

IMEG is growing and is seeking a Lighting Project Designer. The Lighting Project Designer will focus on growth, take ownership of projects, lead smaller projects without senior lighting staff, and gain experience in project management and proposal writing. They will work closely with engineers and consultants to provide engineering solutions and advice to clients, ensuring positive outcomes within the project budget. They will train, mentor, and collaborate with cross-functional teams to meet project goals and client expectations.

Principal Responsibilities
  • Determine appropriate design standards and illuminance and uniformity targets based on IES recommendations.
  • Select appropriate luminaire options and specify these in a luminaire schedule.
  • Create visual presentations using PowerPoint, Bluebeam, InDesign, Photoshop, AGI32, or other methods to illustrate design concepts for client meetings. Create luminaire layouts and perform illuminance calculations using AGI32 software.
  • Design lighting layouts including basic control sensors and draft lighting control sequences of operations and zone schedules in Revit or, more rarely, in AutoCAD.
  • Coordinate with electrical engineering teams on circuiting, emergency lighting, and energy code documentation (ComCheck) as well as other engineering teams, interior designers, and architects as needed throughout the project.
  • Coordinate with luminaire and controls representatives for product information and pricing.
  • Actively contribute to the local section of the Illuminating Engineering Society.
  • Attend project job site visits to review existing conditions or luminaire/controls installations and assist in creating luminaire mockups either in office or at a project site.
  • Develop consistent quality across projects, provide feedback, and support the development of IMEG standards; begin to develop client relationships on projects.
  • Begin to manage projects of smaller to medium size and complexity.
  • Collaborate with senior lighting design team members, project executives, or client executives to learn and write proposals.
Required Skills and Abilities
  • Proficiency in design techniques, tools, and concepts involved in the production of technical plans and specifications.
  • Strong 2D and 3D visualization and design skills.
  • In-depth knowledge and understanding of lighting design including both visual and technical aspects.
  • Ability to train and mentor less experienced staff.
  • Proficiency in AGI32 lighting software.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills; ability to clearly communicate in both oral and written form to individuals or groups.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment.
  • Attention to detail and problem‑solving skills.
  • Eagerness to adapt to new challenges.
  • Proficiency in the use of BIM software.
  • Proficient with MS Office Suite including Word, Excel, and Outlook.
  • Ability to travel up to 10% with occasional overnight stays.
Education and Experience
  • Bachelor of Science (BS) or Bachelor of Arts (BA) in Architectural Engineering, Theatrical Lighting Design, Interior Design, or an equivalent degree; 5 years of mandatory experience in the building design consulting industry (6 preferred). Engineer‑In‑Training (EIT) certification preferred.
  • Or Associates degree, or certificate, in Building Information Modeling (BIM) or Engineering preferred; 9 years of mandatory experience in the building design consulting or construction industry (10 preferred).
Physical Requirements
  • Regularly required to sit, walk, stand, talk, see, hear, and lift objects up to 25 pounds.
  • Occasionally required to drive, kneel, stoop, crouch, crawl, reach with hands or arms, and grasp or pull.
  • Will have limited exposure to outside weather conditions and loud noises.

Salary Range

Salary Range $60,000 - $110,000. Minimums and maximums may vary based on location. Individual pay will be based on several factors including experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities of the applicant. Other rewards may include annual bonuses and stock ownership options.
