BlockReel in Albuquerque, NM seeks an entry-level Gaffer for an independent short film shooting mid-November 2026. This is a deferred compensation role paid as a backend percentage, with a two-day shoot and light prep days.

You will assist with lighting design, set up and strike equipment, manage electrical distribution, and help keep the crew safe on set under the DP’s guidance. A personal lighting kit is preferred but not required; portfolio or reel is a must.

Job description

Seeking an entry-level Gaffer for an independent short film shooting in Albuquerque, NM. This is a deferred compensation role (backend percentage) for an ambitious dramatic thriller, exploring themes of paranoia and perception. We're aiming for a moody, high-contrast visual style to enhance the tension and psychological elements. Your key responsibilities will include assisting with lighting design implementation, setting up and striking lighting equipment, managing electrical distribution, and ensuring crew safety on set under the guidance of the DP. We're looking for someone eager to learn and contribute creatively. While we can provide some basic lighting fixtures, candidates with access to a personal kit (stands, stingers, basic grip gear) will be strongly considered, though it's not a strict requirement. Please have a portfolio or reel, even if it highlights student or small-scale projects. We're planning a 2-day shoot around mid-November 2026, with an additional 1-2 prep days in early November 2026. Specific dates are TBD but will be weekdays, roughly 10-12 hour days. Craft services, water, and some meals will be provided on set. We're looking to fill this role by November 12, 2026.
