Job summary

The City of Troy, Department of Public Works, is seeking an Automotive Mechanic/Technician to service city vehicles and equipment. You will perform mechanical work, diagnostics and electrical troubleshooting, and install or remove emergency lighting and radio equipment.

Requirements include a high school diploma or trade school, 2 years of full-time automotive experience on light-medium trucks, and a valid Michigan driver's license.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or trade school graduate.
  • Two years current full-time paid experience as automotive light-medium truck and off-road equipment mechanic/technician.
  • Knowledge of gasoline and diesel equipment operation principles and repair methods.
  • Valid Michigan driver license with good driving record; CDL with air brakes and tanker endorsements plus Medical Card required.
  • Pre-employment physical and drug screen required.

Responsibilities

  • Perform automotive and equipment mechanical work on trucks and related equipment.
  • Diagnostics, drivability, electrical system troubleshooting.
  • Install and remove emergency lighting and radio equipment.
  • Perform general labor and service tasks as assigned.

Uniform allowance of $450 per fiscal year provided to each active employee.

DUTIES

Perform automotive and equipment mechanical work at an intermediate level (on vehicles and equipment including trucks, vehicles, tractors, mowers, backhoes, loaders, graders, etc.), vehicle diagnostics, drivability, electrical system troubleshooting, and installation and removal of emergency lighting and radio equipment.Perform general labor and service work and other similar work assignments.

REQUIREMENTS
  • High school (or GED equivalent) or mechanic trade school graduate.
  • Two (2) years current full-time paid experience as an automotive light-medium truck and off-road equipment mechanic/technician.
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered for this position.
  • Knowledge of gasoline and diesel equipment operation principles and applicable mechanical repair methods.
  • Must have at the time of application, and maintain, a valid Michigan driver license with a good driving record (based on City of Troy standards).
  • Before initial probation period is complete applicant must obtain a CDL, including air brakes (A) and tanker (N) endorsement and Medical Card, as required by the State of Michigan and a State of Michigan Master Mechanic in Automobile/Light Truck Certification and maintain the certifications throughout employment.
  • As a condition of employment, the successful candidate must pass a pre-employment physical and drug screen (including marijuana).
PREFERENCES
  • Four (4) years recent experience as an automotive light-medium truck and off-road equipment mechanic/technician service.
  • Current State of Michigan Master Mechanic in Automobile/Light Truck and Master ASE Automobile Technician certifications; applicants with relevant certifications may be considered before those without. Applicant must provide copy of certification(s) or wallet certificate with application.
  • Training in vehicle/equipment maintenance from a vocational or trade school.

  • Applicants must receive at least a score of 70 on both the interview and demonstration to be placed on the eligible list.
  • Successful applicant to be appointed within eight (8) weeks of formally accepting the position.

HOURS

Current shift is Monday – Friday, 4:00 pm – 12:30 am. Overtime is required; employees must work at least 50% of overtime occurrences offered. Pursuant to Article 18 shift/schedule changes between first and second shift will be granted on the basis of seniority, within the same job classification, at the pay period immediately following November 1 st and April 1 st each year.
