Job summary

Virginia Beach Parks & Recreation is hiring a Lifeguard to maintain a safe swimming environment, enforce pool rules, and respond to emergencies. The role requires lifeguard certification, CPR/AED/First Aid training, and the ability to pass a departmental swimming skills test.

The position is part-time, up to 27 hours per week, with varied shifts including early mornings, evenings, weekends, and holidays. Training is provided, and the department offers career development opportunities.

Qualifications

• Age 15 or older.
• Current lifeguard training certification from a national, industry or locally recognized organization such as American Red Cross Lifeguarding/First Aid/CPR, National Lifeguard, or YMCA Lifeguard Training.
• Must obtain American Red Cross Lifeguarding/First Aid/CPR/AED within 30 days of employment.
• Must obtain Oxygen Administration certification within 30 days of employment.
• Successful completion of departmental swimming skills test prior to employment.

Responsibilities

• Provide a safe swimming environment and enforce rules.
• Rescue swimmers in danger of drowning and administer first aid as needed.
• Perform CPR/AED and use first aid equipment as required.
• Other duties as assigned by supervisor based on department needs.

Individual assignments will be determined by the supervisor based on the current workloads and department needs.ScheduleThis position is a 7 day a week operation including early mornings, evening, weekend and holidays.Hours - Average scheduled hours up to 27 hours per week.The individual selected for this position will be housed at a primary site but may be scheduled between other park sites/facilities. Schedules will be adjusted seasonally and will vary weekly based on events, facility coverage, and weather. All employees may be expected to work hours in excess of their normally scheduled hours, overtime, splits shifts or maybe be relocated to another location or job assignment in response to short-term department needs and/or City-wide emergencies including weekends, evenings and holidays.TrainingAs a condition of employment, all employees must attend P&R Connection (Department Orientation). If selected for the position, you will be provided an approximate training date at the time of hire. Training is held from 8:30am-5:00pm, every other Friday, at the Parks & Recreation Administration Building.
