Job summary

West Suburban YMCA in Wauwatosa, WI is seeking a part-time lifeguard to supervise pool areas, ensure water safety, and deliver friendly, supportive service to members and guests.

Under the Aquatics Director, you will perform rescues, enforce health and safety rules, complete incident reports, assist with pool maintenance, and participate in in-service trainings while upholding YMCA core values.

Qualifications

• Must pass an advanced swimming and rescue skills test.
• Lifeguard certification (YMCA or Red Cross) is required.
• Candidates must be at least 15 years old and capable of lifting 50 lbs.
• Certifications in CPR, First Aid, and AED must be obtained and maintained.

Responsibilities

• Maintain safe swimming conditions in the pool, on deck, and surrounding areas.
• Prevent accidents by scanning assigned zone from bottom to top and following the 10/10 rule.
• Perform swim tests as required by association policy.
• Enforce health and safety rules and maintain emergency readiness.
• Respond to emergency situations in accordance with YMCA policies and procedures.
• Create an environment that is welcoming, nurturing and genuine for all members and guests.
• Develop rapport and maintain effective relationships with members, participants, and other staff.
• Able to work with other staff as part of a team.
• Complete incident and accident reports as necessary.
• Perform routine maintenance of pool, locker rooms, and surrounding areas to ensure cleanliness.
• Check pool and rescue equipment and promptly report any problems.
• Set up and put away equipment for recreational swims.
• Participation and satisfactory completion of in-service trainings is mandatory.
• Uphold the core values of the YMCA when dealing with people within the YMCA facilities and within the community.
• Work scheduled shifts. Arrangements for substitutes must be previously approved by the Aquatics Director.

Salary Range: $15.00 - $16.00 Hourly

GENERAL FUNCTION:

Under the direction of the Aquatics Director and in accordance with Association policies, the Lifeguard should be able to motivate others in the areas of self-awareness and self-confidence through swimming and aquatics, be able to motivate and effectively communicate with members, parents and students, and exercise mature judgment and sound decision-making.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Qualifications

Individuals considered for this job must take and pass an advanced swimming and rescue skills test. YMCA Lifeguard or RedCross lifeguard certification is required. Individuals in this job must be at least 15 years of age and have the following abilities: exercise mature judgment and sound decision making; relate to people in a positive, but firm manner; observant; safety conscious; react calmly and quickly in an emergency; effectively communicate information on YMCA programs to members and participants; lift a minimum of 50 lbs and have full range of body movement. Lifeguard, CPR for the Professional Rescuer, First Aid, and AED certifications must be obtained and maintained.
