Job summary

The City of Johnson City, Tennessee is seeking a Part-Time Lifeguard to work 28 hours per week. The role involves supervising City pools, lifeguarding, teaching swimming, administering first aid and maintaining pool facilities and chemical balance.

Qualified candidates will have current ARC Lifeguarding/First Aid/AED certifications, strong swimming ability and customer service skills. Pre-employment checks are required, and supervision is provided by the Aquatics Center Supervisor and Head

Job description

The City of Johnson City, Tennessee is accepting online reservations for a Part‑Time Lifeguard to work 28 hours per week. The employee performs responsible service work ensuring the safe use of the City’s public swimming facilities by pool visitors and aids troubled bathers in emergencies; does related work as required. Work is performed under regular supervision. An employee in this class is responsible for supervising the City swimming pools to include lifeguarding, instructing/teaching, first aid, administrative duties, pool maintenance and observation for the purpose of a safe workplace and recreation use facility. The work includes the maintenance and care of the facilities, as well as the supervision of lifeguards. Lifeguards perform difficult protective services associated/related to pool rescues. Supervision is exercised over lifeguards under the regular supervision of the Aquatics Center Supervisor and Head Lifeguard.

Essential Functions of Position
  • Maintains discipline at swimming pool facilities;
  • Supervises temporary lifeguards in the absence of aquatics supervisor or head lifeguard;
  • Observes actions of swimmers and enforces water safety rules and pool rules;
  • Provides emergency life‑saving services to swimmers in need;
  • Maintains proper chemical balance of pool water;
  • Takes water samples and adds chemicals when needed;
  • Adjusts and maintains pool filtration systems and pool chemical feeding systems;
  • Gives swimming instruction to individuals or groups;
  • Provides excellent customer service and interpersonal communication skills;
  • Cleans the pool and related facilities on a regular schedule;
  • Meets and greets patrons, resolves conflicts, explains pool rules, regulations, and policies;
  • Performs pool opening and closing procedures;
  • Takes part in training programs to improve lifeguarding skills;
  • Registers instruction program participants;
  • Sells pool admissions; closes out and balances cash register and prepares deposit;
  • Assists with special events;
  • Performs related tasks as required.
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

General knowledge of water safety rules and of lifesaving and first aid practices and techniques; general knowledge of the cleaning and maintenance requirements for large pools and related equipment and supplies; considerable skill and strength in swimming; ability to maintain chemical balance of pool water; ability to work safely with toxic chemicals; ability to enforce rules and to remain calm under stress; ability to clean and maintain a swimming pool and related facilities; must maintain all required certifications.

Acceptable Experience and Training

Considerable experience as a lifeguard at a community swimming facility; or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the job requirements as a Lifeguard. Must possess current certifications in American Red Cross Lifeguarding/First Aid/AED for the professional rescuer. Pre‑employment physical, drug screening and background check required.
