YMCA of Greater Houston is seeking a Lifeguard Instructor to oversee the instructional, leadership, and safety aspects of pool programs. You will deliver lifeguard and YMCA training, prepare materials, track progress, and certify participants, while maintaining equipment and safety standards.

You will coach students, assess performance, and ensure compliance with YMCA policies and safety regulations, engaging with staff and participants to create a positive learning environment.

Qualifications

  • Minimum age of 16 years.
  • YMCA Swim Lesson Instructor Certification required.
  • ASHI CPR/First Aid certifications required prior to first shift.
  • Ability to maintain certification readiness.
  • Must demonstrate lifeguard skills per YMCA standards.
  • Ability to relate to diverse groups in the community.
  • Ability to pass lifeguard water test.

Responsibilities

Job description

Position Summary:

Under the director of the Aquatic Director, in cooperation with other YMCA staff, and consistent with the YMCA mission, the lifeguard/Swim instructor is responsible for the instruction, leadership, supervision, control and safety of all class participants. The lifeguard instructor is responsible for the appearance, presentation, and working order of all materials and equipment used for lifeguard instruction. It is the lifeguard instructor's responsibility to observe and direct all class participants, and to provide feedback and appropriate correction as instructed or included in the job description.

Essential Functions:
  1. Delivers ASHI BLS, Basic First Aid, Emergency Oxygen and YMCA Lifeguard training within the established guidelines.
  2. Maintains training supplies and communicates with Aquatics Director and Training Center Manager of any needs. Prepares training materials and supplies for each class.
  3. Checks to ensure e-learnings are sent to students and monitors students progress. Closes classes timely and issues certifications.
  4. Provides coaching and feedback to students.
  5. Validates students' skills through practice sessions.
  6. Tests students on skills and provides corrections where needed.
  7. Adheres to program standards including safety and cleanliness standards.
  8. Maintains required program records.
  9. Maintains positive relations with students and other staff.
  10. Maintains all required certifications, in accordance with YMCA standards, policies and procedures.
  11. Attends and participates in all staff meetings and trainings, as required by YMCA standards, policies and procedures.
  12. Reports suspicious and inappropriate behaviors and policy violations.
  13. Follows mandated abuse and incident reporting requirements..
  14. Meets timelines and deadlines related to supporting systems and employee compliance. Example includes but are not limited to Kronos Workforce Ready for review and approval of time sheets

Qualifications:
  1. Minimum age of 16 years.
  2. Obtain YMCA Swim Lesson Instructor Certification in accordance with YMCA standards, policies, and procedures.
  3. Current/or must obtain prior to first scheduled shift: ASHI certification for: CPR for the Professional Rescuer, Basic First Aid and Emergency Oxygen (Administration), Child Abuse Prevention Training, Information Security and Awareness, Workplace Harassment and Bullying, Universal Precautions, and New Staff Orientation Assessment.
  4. Ability to maintain certification-level of physical and mental readiness.
  5. Must demonstrate lifeguard skills in accordance with YMCA standards.
  6. Ability to relate effectively to diverse groups of people from all social and economic segments of the community.
  7. Ability to pass lifeguard water test.
Language Skills:

Ability to read, interpret, retain and teach safety rules, maintenance instructions and aquatics education manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of children, parents, members and other staff, as well as one-on-one situations.

Mathematical Skills:

Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions and decimals.

Reasoning Ability:

Ability to apply common sense, understanding and sound judgment to carry out instructions in written, verbal or diagram form, including assisting with curriculum learning. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations. Ability to maintain confidentiality. Ability to be sensitive and alert to the needs feeling and safety of others. Ability to follow YMCA policies and procedures and state health department code requirements.

Possess adequate vision and hearing to safely monitor and aquatic environment and children. Ability to remain alert, continuously scan all areas of the pool with clear vision and perform strenuous physical tasks necessary for a water rescue. Ability to hear voices, distinguish distress signals and communicate verbally, including projecting voice across distance in both normal and loud situations.
