Job summary

The YMCA of Greenville is seeking a Lifeguard Instructor to ensure safety in YMCA pools and aquatics areas for members, guests, and program participants.

You will teach classes, maintain required certifications, and provide excellent service while upholding policies and safety guidelines. Shifts may vary and the role aligns with our mission-driven, supportive culture.

Qualifications

• Ability to teach aquatics skills to participants.
• Ability to communicate and enforce policies to members, program participants, and guests.
• Ability to react quickly and properly in emergencies.
• Must have enthusiasm and provide excellent customer service.
• Excellent communication skills.
• Must complete New Staff Orientation and Blood Bourne Pathogen training within 30 days.

Responsibilities

• Prepare to teach the assigned class and greet participants daily.
• Provide timely and accurate feedback on participant progress and skills.
• Prepare participants to meet course objectives.
• Adapt teaching approach to match participant experience and ability, and help those needing more support.
• Conduct written and practical testing for lifeguard classes.
• Wear required uniform to convey a professional appearance.
• Provide excellent service to members, guests, and program participants.
• Maintain a clean, safe, stocked, and well-organized work area.
• Keep supervisor informed of equipment needs or concerns.
• Handle and resolve concerns and inform supervisor of unusual situations.

Responsibilities

• Prepared to teach the assigned class. Greets and welcomes participants to class each day. All equipment and instructional methods are appropriate for the class.
• Provides timely and accurate feedback to participants about their progress and skills they need to work on.
• Prepares participants to meet the course objectives.
• Adapting your teaching approach to match the experience and abilities of the participants, identifying participants who are having difficulty and developing effective strategies to help them meet course objectives.
• Conducts written and practical testing for lifeguard classes.
• Wears required uniform to convey a professional appearance.
• Provides excellent service to members, guests, and program participants.
• Maintains a clean, safe, fully stocked and well organized work area.
• Keeps supervisor informed of any equipment needs or concerns.
• Handles and resolves concerns and informs supervisor of unusual situations or unresolved issues.
• Provides accurate, appropriate, and immediate responses to all requests by members/guests.
• Leaves the instructional area in a clean and orderly condition by ensuring all equipment is returned to its appropriate area.
• Maintains required instructional certifications.
• Adhere to policies related to boundaries with consumers
• Attend/complete required abuse risk management training
• Adhere to procedures related to managing high-risk activities and supervising consumers
• Follow mandated reporting requirements
• Adhere to job specific abuse risk management responsibilities
