Job summary

First Coast YMCA is seeking a part-time lifeguard to supervise the pool area, enforce safety rules, and respond to emergencies. The role requires current lifeguard certification and up-to-date CPR/AED/First Aid credentials, with a focus on protective supervision and rapid action in water emergencies.

The position emphasizes health, safety, and excellent customer service to members and guests in a welcoming environment.

Qualifications

• Minimum age of 16.
• Certifications: CPR for the Professional Rescuer, AED, O2, First Aid certification.
• Current YMCA Lifeguarding Certification.
• Ability to maintain certification-level of physical and mental readiness.
• Must demonstrate lifeguard skills in accordance with YMCA standards.

Responsibilities

• Maintains constant surveillance of the pool area.
• Reviews emergency procedures and responds to emergencies per YMCA policies; completes reports.
• Maintains effective relationships with members, participants and staff.
• Applies safety rules for pool and aquatic areas.
• Keeps accurate records as required by YMCA and Health Dept.
• Performs equipment checks and ensures available equipment.
• Inspects pool for hazardous conditions on arrival.
• Conducts chemical testing and takes appropriate actions.
• Attends staff meetings and training.
• Follows YMCA standards and best practices.

Essential Functions:

• Maintains constant surveillance of the pool area.
• Knows/reviews all emergency procedures and responds to emergency situations immediately in accordance with YMCA policies and procedures. Completes related reports as required.
• Maintains effective relationships with the members, participants and other staff.
• Knows, understands, and consistently applies safety rules, policies and guidelines for the pool and aquatic area.
• Maintains accurate records as required by the YMCA and/or the state Health Department code.
• Performs equipment checks and ensures appropriate equipment is available as needed.
• Checks the pool for hazardous conditions when arriving.
• Performs chemical testing at appropriate times of the day, as required, and takes appropriate action.
• Attends all staff meetings and training as required.
• Ensures all First Coast YMCA standards and best practices are implemented and followed.
• Applies YMCA policies and procedures, including those related to best practices, emergency procedures, medical and disciplinary situations and child abuse prevention.
• Ensures the health and safety of all members/guests.
• Inspect physical space to ensure the safety, orderliness, sanitation and cleanliness of facilities.

  • Tread water for 2 minutes
  • Swim 100 yards front crawl
• Phase
  • Swim 50 yards(2 laps) of each stroke-Front crawl with head up, sidestroke, breaststroke, breaststroke with head up, elementary backstroke kick with hands on chest.
  • Perform a feet first surface dive in 6-7 feet of water, then swim underwater for 15 feet

• Must be able to remain alert.
• Must be able to sit or stand for extended periods.
• Adequate ability to hear noises and distinguish distress signals.
• Ability to continuously scan all areas of the pool with clear vision.
• Ability to perform strenuous physical tasks necessary for a water rescue.
• Ability to communicate verbally, including projecting voice across distance in normal and loud situations.
