POSITION SUMMARYMaintains safe swimming conditions in the pool, deck, and surrounding areas. Creates a safe and positive atmosphere that promotes member safety and engagement in accordance with YMCA policies and procedures. Promote the YMCA’s four core values – Caring, Honesty, Respect, and Responsibility in all program activities.ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS & PRINCIPLESMaintains active and constant surveillance of the pool area, and all individuals in the pool and on deck (and spa area for Thayer Y), continuously scanning for possible signs of trouble or danger. Prevent injuries and minimize or eliminate hazardous situations.Knows/reviews all emergency procedures and responds to emergency situations immediately in accordance with YMCA policies, procedures, and the “safe-in-six” model. Completes related reports as required.Maintains effective, positive relationships with the members, participants and other staff.Knows, understands, and consistently applies and enforces all safety rules, policies and guidelines for the pool and aquatic area with a courteous but firm and brief explanation realizing that any distraction could cost a life.Maintains accurate records as required by the YMCA and/or the state Health Department code.Performs equipment checks and ensures appropriate equipment is available as needed.Checks the pool for hazardous conditions when arriving.Performs chemical testing when not guarding, as required, and takes appropriate action. Lifeguards are solely responsible for water quality. Chemical levels must be maintained throughout the duration of your shift. If the water needs attention, notify your supervisor and take immediate action. Records of the readings must be kept chronologically in the log book.Attend to misplaced swim equipment (kickboards, weights, belts, etc). Cleanliness & Overall Appearance is of utmost importance.Lifeguards must remain in designated guarding areas at all times while on duty, and should NEVER turn their back to the pool or leave the pool unguarded for any reason.Lifeguards will not allow members, guests, program participants, or other staff to distract them from ensuring patrons are safe.All lifeguards are First Responders to ANY emergency within the YMCA premises. Respond quickly to all emergency situations. Administer First Aid to victims.Exhibits a style of work that includes a positive attitude, cooperation, patience, flexibility, self-motivation, and professionalism.Cleaning duties will be assigned as needed (sanitizing area).Immediately report any incidents to supervisor and complete all necessary forms.Communicate effectively with all other YMCA staff members.Administer the policies and programs as assigned from the YMCA staff.Attends all staff meetings and in-service training.Perform all other tasks as assigned.YMCA LIFEGUARD DRESS CODEMALES: Male Lifeguards are to be dressed and ready for work prior to rotating into their shift. Acceptable attire is a YMCA issued Lifeguard T-Shirt. Swim suits may be Red or Blue only with NO designs.FEMALES: Female Lifeguards are to be dressed and ready to work prior to rotating into their shift. Acceptable attire is a 1-piece racing suit or Lifeguard suit. Has the functional and technical knowledge and skills required to perform well; uses best practices and demonstrates up-to-date knowledge and skills in technology.QUALIFICATIONSMinimum age of 15.MUST be Up to date on all Certifications: CPR for the Professional Rescuer, AED, Basic First Aid and Emergency Oxygen.MUST have Current YMCA Lifeguard Certification or equivalent.Ability to maintain certification-level of physical and mental readiness.Able to lift at least 50 pounds.Must demonstrate lifeguard skills in accordance with YMCA standards.PHYSICAL DEMANDSHear noises and distress signals in the aquatic environment, including in the water and anywhere around the zone of responsibility.
