Job summary

The Squaxin Island Tribe’s Tu Ha’ Buts Youth Center is seeking a Lifeguard to ensure water safety and respond to emergencies. The role includes rescuing, administering first aid, and following program policies while maintaining a courteous, professional presence at the pool and surrounding areas.

Ideal candidates are 16+ years old with current Lifeguard, CPR/First Aid certifications and must be able to work afternoons, evenings and weekends; pre-employment testing applies, and duties may include

SUMMARY

this position is responsible for ensuring safety of community members including accident prevention in the water and on surrounding areas. Lifeguards will rescue and provide care for accident victims. All activities will be planned based upon the prevention philosophy of the Tu Ha’ Buts Youth Center and must be implemented per program policies and procedures and operating principles. Must be able to work a variety of hours, especially afternoons, evenings and weekends. Typical part-time hours are weekdays 3:00-7:00 and weekends and school breaks 8:00-6:30. Typical full-time hours vary. Variable days will be scheduled. Weekend shifts will be shared with other staff members so one person will not work every weekend. Summer hours will change to meet increased demand.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Recognizes and responds effectively to emergencies.
  • Inspects the facility on a daily schedule and reports unsafe conditions and equipment to a supervisor.
  • Comply with and enforce all policies, procedures and regulations set by the department.
  • Maintain a professional manner when interacting with the community.
  • Responsible for prevention of accidents and minimizing or eliminating hazardous conditions.
  • Respond quickly to all emergency situations in the water or on surrounding areas.
  • Administer any first aid needed by a victim of an accident.
  • Actively educate community members around the purpose of rules and regulations.
  • Complete all records and reports as required.
  • Assist with cleaning of locker rooms, pool, pool deck, pool lobby and other pool areas.
  • Assist with maintenance and organization of pool systems and equipment.
  • Perform other support duties as required.
  • Exercise regularly to maintain a fitness level. (swim at least 1000yds a week)
  • Attend trainings and staff meetings as required.
  • Other duties as assigned
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Must be at least 16 years of age.
  • Must be able to obtain and/or maintain current certification in the following:
  • Lifeguard Training and First Aid
  • Cross CPR for the Professional Rescuer
  • Pre-employment testing of lifeguarding skills and knowledge.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

This position has no supervisory responsibilities.

QUALIFICATIONS:

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:

High School student of good standing or High School Diploma/GED. Prior lifeguard training/experience is preferred and those in-process of earning their certifications are welcome to apply.

LANGUAGE SKILLS:

ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of the organization.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS:

Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent to draw and interpret bar graphs.

REASONING ABILITY:

Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS:

Must have a current Lifeguard Certification (ARC, YMCA,) Current CPR/First Aid Certification. American Red Cross Lifeguard Training and First Aid; American Red Cross CPR for the Professional Rescuer and a pre-employment testing of lifeguarding skills and knowledge. Preferred Certification Certified Pool Operator, and Water Safety Instructor.

While performing the duties of this generally is regularly required to talk or hear, the employee is also frequently required to stand, walk, use hands to finger, handle or feel, reach with hands and arms, the employee is occasionally required to climb, or balance, stoop, kneel, or climb and taste or smell, Ability to stand for a one and a half hour block of time on the pool deck and lift up to lift 60 lbs safely.

DRUG FREE WORKPLACE:

The successful candidate will be required to have a urinalysis for drug and alcohol screening in accordance with the Tribe’s Drug Free Workplace Policy.

There will be no tolerance for the abuse of alcohol or use of illegal drugs while employed with the Parks and Recreation Department. Use of tobacco in front of youth during work time is not allowed. Tobacco use is allowable during breaks only and does designated locations. Any violation of these policies is cause for immediate termination.
