Career Academy South Bend is seeking a Life Skills Teacher (Special Education) to deliver specialized instruction in a self-contained classroom, developing academic, functional and adaptive skills aligned to each student’s IEP.

Responsibilities include developing and implementing IEP goals, providing differentiated instruction, collaborating with families and allied staff, and ensuring compliance with IDEA/Article 7.

Qualifications

  • Must have Indiana Teaching License with Early Literacy Endorsement.
  • Experience working with students with significant cognitive or developmental disabilities.
  • Ability to differentiate instruction and utilize assistive technology.
  • Strong communication, collaboration, and classroom management skills.

General Description:

The Primary School Life Skills Teacher (SE) provides specialized instruction to students with moderate to severe disabilities in a self-contained classroom setting. This role focuses on developing academic, functional, and adaptive skills aligned with each student\'s Individualized Education Program (IEP). The teacher collaborates with families, related service providers, and support staff to build independence and enhance quality of life for students with diverse learning needs.

Qualifications:

  • Must have a valid Indiana Teaching License along with an Early Literacy Endorsement
  • Bachelor’s degree in Special Education
  • Experience working with students with significant cognitive or developmental disabilities
  • Knowledge of functional academic instruction, life skills curriculum, and adaptive behavior supports
  • Ability to differentiate instruction and utilize assistive technology
  • Strong communication, collaboration, and classroom management skills

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Develop and implement IEPs focused on academic, functional, and behavioral goals

School Activities:

  • Support school initiatives related to inclusive education and student well-being

  • Deep understanding of special education practices, life skills instruction, and behavior support
  • Patience, empathy, and a student-centered mindset
  • Strong organization, time management, and documentation skills
  • Ability to adapt instruction based on physical, cognitive, and emotional needs
  • Comfort with providing personal care assistance, including toileting, feeding, and mobility (as required)
