Job summary

PACE Southeast Michigan is seeking a Recreation Therapist to assist in developing and implementing recreation therapy groups tailored to meet the needs of participants. This role includes coordinating leisure activities and ensuring the timely completion of essential documentation.

Qualified candidates must have a Bachelor’s degree in Recreation Therapy or Leisure Services and a Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist certificate. Relevant experience with elderly populations is essential, along with the physical ability to assist participants as needed.

Qualifications

• Must have at least one year of experience working with frail or elderly populations.
• Legal authorization to practice in Michigan required.
• Ability to push occupied wheelchairs and assist participants with ambulation.

Job description

Under general direction of the Activities Recreation Program Leader and according to departmental procedures, assists in the planning, developing and implementing recreation therapy groups that are designed to meet the social, physical, spiritual, emotional and cognitive needs of the participant. Informs the Activities Recreation Program Leader of necessary communications related to and including business unit, department and staff. The Recreation Therapist participates in the initial and interval assessment process of all candidates or participants of the PACE program. Communicates assessment findings to the Interdisciplinary Team (IDT) and assists in the formulation of a coordinated care plan to meet the individual needs of each participant. Continuously evaluates and seeks to improve the Recreation Therapy Program at PACE Southeast Michigan.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities

• Coordinate the development of the monthly recreation therapy calendar.
• Ensure all scheduled RT groups are carried out according to the monthly RT calendar.
• Plan and develop recreational groups to meet participant needs.
• Facilitate RT groups and stimulation to meet the RT care plan goals and needs of participants.
• Coordinate with transportation supervisor for community out trips.
• Maintain appropriate inventory of supplies and equipment and inform the Center Manager when supplies need replenishment.
• Ensure timely and accurate completion of all required documentation including intakes, care plans, reviews and progress notes.
• Maintain work area in an orderly and clean condition and ensure safety and well-being of staff and others.
• Advocate for participants, report any unusual occurrences to the Center Manager and follow up with necessary documentation.
• Demonstrate leadership when leading groups and in delegating work with other disciplines.
• Demonstrate excellent verbal and written skills and ability to work with other disciplines.
• Attend team meetings.
• Maintain confidentiality of all participant information.
• Follow appropriate infection control policies and universal precautions to ensure participant safety.
• Perform any other miscellaneous duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required

• Bachelor’s Degree in Recreation Therapy or Leisure Services.
• Legal authorization to practice in Michigan.
• Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist certificate (required).
• Will act only within scope of authority to practice.
• Physical ability to push occupied wheelchairs, furniture and assist participants with ambulation.
• At least one (1) year of experience with a frail or elderly population.
