Job summary

The South Carolina Department of Corrections is seeking a security supervisor to oversee housing-unit staff and maintain custody and control of inmates. You will conduct inspections to ensure security, safety and sanitation and participate in formal and informal counts.

Under general supervision, you will investigate misconduct, supervise staff, train them to performance standards, counsel when needed, and prepare required reports. Eight weeks of basic training is required.

Qualifications

• A high school diploma and relevant experience.
• Bachelor’s degree may substitute for the required experience.
• Three years’ experience in correctional, security, military, or police work, including one year supervisory experience.
• Certification by the SCDC training academy and completion of basic supervisory course within six months.

Responsibilities

• Make routine inspections of the living areas for compliance with security, safety and sanitation standards.
• Conducts investigations of alleged misconduct on the part of inmates and security personnel assigned to the area of responsibility.
• Assists in conducting formal and informal counts.
• Supervises the job performance, conduct and appearance of assigned security personnel and prepares employee evaluations.
• Counsels, recommends disciplinary action, and trains subordinate staff to required standards of performance.
• Prepare reports as needed or required.

SCDC Minimum Requirements

• A high school diploma and three (3) years’ experience in correctional, security, military, or police work to include one (1) year of supervisory experience.
• A degree in criminal Justice or a related degree may substitute for supervisory experience year for year (associate and above = 1 year).
• Must be certified by the SCDC training academy and successfully complete the basic supervisory course within six (6) months of entry into the position.
