Position Purpose

The Veterinarian Technician provides excellent veterinary care to Vetco Total Care patients and phenomenal customer care to their owners. The Veterinary Technician represents the mission and values to all clients and partners, sets the tone for the technical and customer support team, and fosters cohesion and motivation within the hospital.

Essential Job Functions
  • Greet clients and patients, escort into an exam room, obtain weight and vital signs, record all in the electronic medical record, and begin documentation of the patient visit.
  • Assist the veterinarian with routine and emergency appointments, surgery, dentistry, and euthanasia, under direct supervision.
  • Perform patient restraint, obtain and process laboratory samples, handle and dispense medications as directed by the veterinarian, and maintain the electronic medical record.
  • Schedule appointments, communicate with and educate clients, relay test results, maintain and update inventory, and manage accounts receivable.
  • Prepare patients for surgical and dental procedures, support induction and monitoring of anesthetized patients, monitor during recovery, and prepare for discharge to owner or overnight care facility.
  • Provide in‑hospital treatments for sick patients, including injectable and oral medications, intravenous therapies, keeping patients clean, watered, and fed as directed, and safely walk canine patients when necessary.
  • Participate in training of new staff members and general dissemination of knowledge as required.
  • Maintain a clean and organized hospital environment, performing regular cleaning based on a pre‑determined schedule.
Other Duties And Responsibilities
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.
  • Provide backup phone and front‑desk support as needed.
Nature Of Supervision

In all activities related to patient care, the Veterinary Technician takes direct supervision from veterinarians and the Hospital Office Manager or Hospital Leader on Duty. Overall, direction comes from the Hospital Office Manager.

Planning And Problem Solving

The Veterinary Technician plays a crucial role in ensuring that day‑to‑day operations of the hospital are efficient and provide an optimal experience for patients and clients.

Supervisory Responsibility

This position has no immediate supervisory duties.

Education and Experience
  • College or college‑equivalent education (completed) as required to become a Credentialed Veterinary Technician in the state where the hospital is located.
  • At least 1 year of previous experience as a Veterinary Technician or working in a veterinary practice.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Compassionate and sympathetic, able to maintain a professional attitude during emotional and stressful situations.
  • Telephone and computer skills.
  • Team player willing to learn new techniques, offer creative ideas, and accept change.
Work Environment

The majority of duties are conducted in the Vetco Total Care full‑service hospital. The position requires bending, kneeling, lifting (up to 30 pounds) and standing for long periods, with significant direct contact with clients and their pets.

Regular communication occurs with clients, veterinary specialists, and companies that provide products and services utilized by the practice.
