Job Summary

The role of the Licensed Practical Nurse is to work as a member of the corrections health care team by demonstrating knowledge for assisting in the delivery of patient care through the nursing process of assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation. Under the supervision of the RN(s), directs and guides patient teaching and activities that commensurate with his/her education and demonstrated competencies.

Qualifications and Requirements

• Ability to use the nursing process, as evidenced by physical and psychosocial observation skills.

• Spanish fluency is desirable, but not essential.

Work Environment

The nurse works in a medical environment, which is generally indoors in a climate-controlled environment. The working environment may change somewhat between locations. This job is performed in a correctional facility. Employees are exposed to some level of risk and/or harm by inmates including exposure to blood borne pathogens. Employee is expected to work in accordance with all security rules and regulations to minimize the risk of danger and/or harm to themselves or other employees. Nurses will be assigned a home location, however, location assignments will change from time to time and the nurse must be able to cover at any location, as assigned, either temporarily or on a long-term basis.

Essential Functions

• Have strong mental acuity to tolerate verbal and mental communications from inmates and maintain a professional demeanor.
• Ability to respond quickly to emergency situations within the correctional unit.
• Delivers nursing care in a manner that minimizes the risk of transfer of infection by using approved infection and control guidelines.
• Perform emergency and rescue response functions during emergency codes and drills held without notice, including maximum security areas.
• Conduct assessments and health care services across neurology, cardiovascular, pulmonary, endocrine, metabolic, gastrointestinal, renal, genitourinary, psychiatric disorders, blood draws and IV therapy, care routines, infection control, and wound management.
• Perform testing/procedures per provider orders such as EKGs, ear irrigation, dressings, ace wraps, and nebulizer treatments; perform phlebotomy/lab tests according to lab policy and procedure.
• Conduct sick calls.
• Maintain clinical competency and exhibit professional growth and development.
• Report unusual incidents, identify breaches of security, and adhere to security protocol.
• Under supervision of a Registered Nurse (RN), assist in the assessment of the physical, psychological, and social dimensions of patients in the Health Care Unit and, as necessary, in the housing units.
• Implement individualized treatment programs as directed by the Health Care Clinician.
• Count controlled substances, syringes, needles, and sharps at the beginning of each shift with another staff member and sign count logs.
• Implement clinical and technical aspects of care in accordance with established policies, procedures, and protocols, intervening with proper safety techniques, procedures, and standard precautions.
• Respond to a code or health emergency within standard guidelines.
• Administer medications in accordance with Health Care Clinician’s orders and protocols, utilizing proper techniques and procedures including IV therapy (when certified) and all other approved routes of administration.
• Use pharmacy knowledge and available resources to include drug reaction and overdose prevention in medication administration.
• Obtain diagnostic tests in accordance with Health Care Clinician’s orders and protocols, including body fluid specimens and EKGs using proper techniques and procedures.
• Communicate information to ancillary departments using established referral processes.
• Assist the Health Care Clinician in medical or minor surgical procedures as necessary and/or requested to meet individual needs of patients.
• Implement nutrition and therapeutic diet plans through proper techniques and procedures as ordered by Health Care Clinicians.
• Document nursing encounters using the SOAP form of charting as required by policy and procedure, maintaining a commitment to legal accountability.
• Resolve patient issues as appropriate – notify appropriate supervisor if unresolved.
• Inventory, order and restock supplies as needed.
• Recognize signs/symptoms and/or patient changes and notify Clinician.
• Measure and document the patient’s primary problems, including vital signs, basic labs, psycho-social history, and medications to prepare the patient for examination by the provider, anticipating the need for required supplies and equipment.
• Participate as part of the care team with efficient communication among team members.
• Review patient charts and notify the provider of lab and radiology results outside abnormal parameters.
• Provide patient education to clients utilizing the electronic medical record.
• Wash and prepare instruments for sterilization.
• Exhibit punctuality and dependability in attendance and work habits.
• Perform other related job duties as required.

Physical Requirements

• Continuous use of corrected vision, depth perception, wide field of vision, and color; also, the job will demand continuous use of olfactory, auditory, and tactile senses.
• This position is highly active and requires standing, walking, bending, kneeling, and stooping all day.
• This employee must frequently lift and/or move items over 25 pounds.
• Must be able to lift, carry and handle equipment, supplies, and other work site materials according to position requirements.
