Job summary

Virginia Department of Corrections (VADOC) is seeking a Licensed Practical Nurse at Lunenburg Correctional Center to deliver evidence-based nursing care under RN supervision. The role includes screening, medication administration, and collaboration with treatment staff to implement care plans.

Hiring Range: $31.10 - $40.35 /hr.

Job Duties

• $3,500 Sign-On Bonus or up to 10K Student Loan Repayment may be available for eligible new hires
• LPNs provide evidence-based nursing care utilizing the nursing process, principles, practices and techniques of general nursing care as determined by Standards of Practice under the direction of a Registered Nurse.
• Screens for sick call, administers medications, and provides first aid and basic life support to patients and employees as needed.
• Maintains open lines of communication with security and treatment staff while providing input and feedback to assist the facility provider in organizing a treatment plan.
• Records all pertinent information into the medical record.
• Interacts with other departments as needed.
• Promotes continued competence through education/certification with a focus on correctional nursing.
• Nurses must have the ability to work hours, days and locations as assigned along with being capable and available to provide coverage as needed to meet institutional needs.
• Assignments to other duties or locations may be necessary to meet the clinical and administrative needs of the Department.

Minimum Qualifications

• Graduate of an accredited school of nursing
• Must possess and maintain a valid unrestricted Virginia Licensed Practical Nursing (LPN) license issued by the board of nursing or a multi-state compact license (if you are a recent graduate of a nursing program in VA and not licensed, the NCLEX-PN exam must be scheduled at the time of application)
• Working knowledge of principles, practices and techniques of practical or general nursing care
• Demonstrated ability to screen complaints of physical ailments and refer necessary cases to other medical professionals
• Ability to maintain appropriate documentation, provide first aid, and carry out providers’ orders in applying treatments
• Ability to follow oral and written instructions and to administer practical nursing care
• Certified Basic Life Support (BLS) for health care providers with current certification through American Heart Association (AHA) or American Red Cross (ARC) is required upon hire

Additional Considerations

• Experience working in a Corrections or Law enforcement environment
• Experience or related training in delivery of general nursing and emergency medical care
