A Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN), also known as a Licensed Vocational Nurse (LVN) in some states, is a healthcare professional who provides basic nursing care under the supervision of registered nurses (RNs) and physicians. LPNs play a crucial role in patient care by monitoring patient health, administering medications, and providing comfort and support to patients and their families.
Primary Responsibilities
- Deliver direct patient care in various healthcare settings, focusing on basic nursing functions such as medication administration, vital sign monitoring, wound care, and patient education.
- Work as part of a healthcare team to ensure patients receive safe, compassionate, and effective care.

Key Duties and Responsibilities
- Monitor and record patient vital signs (blood pressure, temperature, pulse, respiration)
- Administer prescribed medications via oral, topical, and injection routes
- Perform basic wound care, dressing changes, and catheter care
- Assist patients with activities of daily living (bathing, eating, mobility)
- Collect specimens for laboratory testing
- Observe and report changes in patient condition to supervising RN or physician
Patient Monitoring and Assessment
- Conduct routine health assessments and screenings
- Monitor patient responses to treatments and medications
- Recognize and report signs of complications or adverse reactions
- Maintain accurate documentation of patient care and observations
- Assist with diagnostic procedures and tests
Medication Administration
- Prepare and administer medications according to physician orders
- Verify patient identity and medication accuracy using safety protocols
- Monitor patients for medication side effects and therapeutic responses
- Maintain medication records and inventory
- Educate patients about medication purposes and side effects
Patient Education and Support
- Provide basic health education to patients and families
- Teach patients about disease management and self-care techniques
- Offer emotional support and comfort to patients and families
- Assist with discharge planning and follow-up care instructions
- Promote patient safety and infection control practices
Documentation and Communication
- Maintain detailed patient records and care plans
- Document all nursing interventions and patient responses
- Communicate effectively with healthcare team members
- Participate in shift reports and team meetings
- Ensure compliance with healthcare regulations and facility policies
Equipment and Supply Management
- Operate and maintain basic medical equipment
- Ensure proper sterilization and cleaning of equipment
- Monitor and order supplies as needed
- Maintain clean and organized work environment
Education and Licensing Requirements
- Current state licensure as a Licensed Practical Nurse
- Current BLS certification
- Clear background check and drug screening
