Job summary

Middle Georgia State University is seeking a licensed practical nurse (LPN) to provide medical services in a campus clinic across MGA campuses. The role combines clinical care, triage, immunization oversight, and administrative duties, under supervision of a nurse practitioner.

Qualifications

Job Summary

This position provides medical services commensurate with the scope of practice and training of an LPN under the Georgia Board of Nursing in a campus clinic setting with supervision of a nurse practitioner. Responsibilities cover clinical and administrative duties, including but not limited to: reception desk and phone coverage, appointment scheduling, performing basic triage, nursing assessment, health histories, documentation of findings, wound care, nurse-driven protocols as ordered, management of protected health information via patient forms/electronic health records, and activation of emergency medical services for any severe/emergent patient presentation. The position will provide and/or assist with patient care, including but not limited to: collection of vital signs, lab specimens, phlebotomy, point-of-care and CLIA-waived testing, procedures, examinations, and administration of approved injections/medications. Position will also include oversight of immunization records and storage per HIPAA/FERPA/USG compliance requirements. Position will participate in campus wellbeing initiatives and assist with student health outreach. The ability to collaborate and work as a team with colleagues across other campuses is an essential function of this position.

Responsibilities

Clinical (60%) - Notes abnormal/severe/urgent/emergent patient presentations/complaints and immediately activates emergency medical services and/or notifies provider appropriately. Frequently assesses patients in exam rooms and waiting areas. Maintains patient safety, privacy, and comfort at all times. Explains all procedures and treatments to patients ensuring patient understanding. Ensures patient care, treatments, and procedures are rendered in a skillful, timely, orderly, and pleasant manner. Collects vital signs, height/weight, intake forms; performs vision exams and manual blood pressure checks. Performs procedures and collects urine/blood/swab specimens utilizing proper technique, including venipuncture. Administers injections and medications accurately and safely with proper technique and rights of administration. Instructs patients utilizing written and verbal instructions and ensures all information is documented in the medical record in a legible and accurate manner. Exam rooms, instruments, and equipment are cleaned, maintained, and/or disposed of properly; including proper disposal of hazardous waste.

Administrative (30%) - Greets visitors at front desk; answers phone; replies to emails; monitors voicemail. Schedules appointments appropriately; relays accurate information to patient and provider; ensures clinic schedule is up to date at all times. Performs supply inventory, monitors expiration dates, and compiles supply/equipment/data requests as needed. Retrieves and reviews patient charts for requested diagnostic studies and their completeness before and after provider assessment. Maintains accurate records of supplies and fees appropriately.

Other Duties as Assigned (10%) - Assists with planning and execution of health outreach/events on campus. Collaborates with departments and organizations on and off campus as needed. Utilizes flexibility and professionalism with a variety of campus clinic/student health needs. Completes a variety of training opportunities to further support campus health, including but not limited to suicide prevention, HIV prevention, HIPAA refresher, campus security authority, etc. Attend meetings and university functions as required.

High school diploma and graduation from an approved practical nursing program; licensed in the state of Georgia.

Other Required Qualifications

Registered as an LPN in the state of Georgia, license must be maintained, active, and in good standing at all times. Active CPR/BLS certification required; certification/renewal must be maintained/active at all times. May travel within the Central Georgia area to all five MGA campuses; must have reliable form of transportation and possess a valid driver¿s license by the state of Georgia for the type of vehicle operated.

Must be able to recognize an emergency and respond appropriately. Must be able to perform work with integrity and accuracy, particularly in reporting patient observations. Must be able to adapt to changes in environment and maintain professionalism. Must be able to utilize common sense and good judgement when required to make independent decisions. Must be able to exercise tact and diplomacy when dealing with patients, patients\' families, business and industry representatives, and physicians. Ability to network with area medical providers and facilities to enhance outreach and referrals when needed. Knowledge of evidence-based practice and nursing trends. Must possess good clinical judgement and be able to work with the realization that errors in giving treatments and other procedures could have a detrimental effect on the patient. Must be able to utilize discretion in handling confidential information. Maintains current knowledge of policy, practice, procedure, and clinical guideline requirements. Must possess excellent teamwork and interpersonal skills, critical thinking, knowledge of disease processes and presentation in patients, as well as good decision making, time management, and problem-solving skills. Understanding of patient confidentiality, HIPAA, FERPA, and USG policies and procedures. Attention to orderliness, cleanliness, cost containment, and quality improvement. Competency with a variety of medication administration techniques, including intramuscular/subcutaneous injections and oral medications. Competency with venipuncture, phlebotomy, and proper specimen collection with a variety of standard medical equipment and supplies. Competency with infection control protocols, safe handling of biohazardous wastes, needle and sharps safety. Competency with appropriate intervention via CPR/AED; Epipen; Narcan, application of oxygen via nasal cannula. Competency with provision of basic first aid and wound care. Computer/software skills; ability to utilize electronic health record system and a variety of standard office equipment; electronic and paper files; telehealth; Microsoft Office/Teams.
