Job summary

Mental Health Support Services (MHSS) in Chesterfield County, VA, is hiring a full-time Licensed Practical Nurse to provide nursing care in residential homes. You will support individuals with intellectual/developmental disabilities, monitor vital signs, and assist physicians and RNs as needed. A Virginia LPN license and valid driver’s license are required.

Applicants will undergo pre-employment drug testing and background checks. Weekend and overnight shifts are possible as part of the schedule.

Qualifications

Who We Are

Mental Health Support Services (MHSS) is the provider of mental health, developmental disabilities, and substance use disorder services for children and adults in Chesterfield County. We are currently seeking dedicated and compassionate full-time Licensed Practical Nurses to provide professional nursing care and services to our consumers in our residential homes. Minimum Education and Experience

High school diploma or GED; graduation from an accredited school of practical nursing. Two or more years of experience working with individuals with intellectual/developmental disabilities preferred. Experience with an electronic health record preferred.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Working knowledge of the principles and practices of practical nursing; of medical terminology. Ability to apply simple nursing techniques; to record accurate information on patients' charts; to follow verbal and written directions; to follow established policies and procedures; to communicate effectively orally and in writing; to operate a personal computer and related software and other standard office equipment; to interact with a variety of people from different cultures and backgrounds and of varying ages; to develop and maintain effective working relationships with internal and external customers.

Additional Requirements

Possess licensure as a Licensed Practical Nurse by the Virginia Board of Nursing.

Current valid driver’s license and good driving record required. Based on the Virginia DMV point system, records must not reflect a total of six or more demerit points within the twenty-four months preceding the anticipated hire date, or one major violation of six demerit points within the preceding thirty-six months. Out-of-state driving records must be obtained by applicant and presented at time of interview. Records must reflect at least three years of history and be dated within thirty days of interview date.

Pre-employment drug testing, FBI criminal background check and education/degree verification required.

This position is considered Safety Sensitive and is subject to random drug and alcohol testing.

Duties include but are not limited to the following:

• Takes, monitors, and records vital signs (e.g. temperature, pulse, blood pressure, respiration rate);
• Observes, records and reports symptoms, reactions and changes in patient condition;
• Performs triage;
• Assists physicians and registered nurses during patient examinations;
• Prepares and administers prescribed medications, treatments and therapies;
• Inventories, orders and stocks medications and medical supplies;
• Educates staff, families, and patients on routine care and prevention procedures;
• Maintains medical charts and records;
• Schedules patients' appointments;
• Transports individuals to medical appointments, and
• Perform other work as required.

PLEASE NOTE: Position open until filled (first review to begin October 5, 2026).

Overnight shifts and some weekend shifts needed.

Week 1: Saturday, Sunday & Thursday; 7:00 p.m. - 7:00 a.m.; Friday; 8:00 p.m. - 7:00 a.m.

Week 2: Monday; 10:00 p.m. - 7:00 a.m.; Tuesday & Wednesday 7:00 p.m. - 7:00 a.m.
