Job summary

The Arizona Department of Veterans Services is hiring Licensed Practical Nurses (LPNs) for the Arizona State Veterans Home in Yuma, AZ. This full-time role features 12-hour day shifts from 6:00 a.m.

to 6:30 p.m., with every other weekend off, and a salary range of $26.31–$31.01 per hour DOE. You will provide high-quality direct care to veterans, administer medications, participate in care planning, and collaborate with a multidisciplinary team to improve resident outcomes.

Qualifications

  • Knowledge of gerontological/geriatric nursing theory and practice
  • Knowledge of resident condition and changing medical/physical/psychological care needs
  • Understanding of pharmacology and medicines
  • Familiarity with development and implementation of patient care plans within a team nursing concept
  • Knowledge of laws and regulations governing practical nursing practices and medication dispensing

Responsibilities

  • Administer medications and perform treatments as ordered by the physician within the scope of licensure
  • Observe and report effectiveness of medications and treatments
  • Ensure supplies and medications are available
  • Receive and deliver resident information regarding medical, social, and functional needs
  • Participate in shift reports and interdisciplinary communication
  • Communicate with residents, families, and staff to ensure appropriate care
  • Contribute to initial admission nursing assessments and care plans
  • Supervise subordinate staff and assist with ADLs and resident progress
  • Conduct in-service training and staff development
  • Train/orient new employees
  • Respond rapidly to emergencies and assist with other duties as assigned

Job Duties:
  • Administer medication and performs treatments on an assigned unit as ordered by the physician and within scope of license (Medications may be in a variety of forms including oral, enteral, parenteral, suppository, etc. Treatments may include sterile and aseptic wound cleaning and dressing, postural drainage and percussion, tracheostomy, gastrostomy and jejunostomy care and catheter care.)
  • Observe and report the effectiveness of medications and treatments
  • Ensure an adequate amount of supplies and medication are available
  • Receive and deliver a variety of information regarding resident medical, social, functional, and other needs
  • Participate in receiving and giving of shift reports
  • Communicate with residents, family, and staff as necessary to ensure residents receive appropriate care from the interdisciplinary team
  • Complete the initial admission nursing assessment tool on a newly admitted resident
  • Assist with the development of the Minimum Data Set (MDS) assessments, ongoing quarterly reviews, and care plans
  • Supervise subordinate staff and assist with direct resident care for the completion of Activities of Daily Living (ADL’s) including bathing, dressing, observations, treatment, and summary of resident progress
  • Conduct and participate in in-service training and staff development programs for regularly employed staff and other duties as assigned
  • Train/orient new employees
  • Perform technical duties as assigned (e.g., collect specimens, respond to emergency situations rapidly and appropriately)
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities (KSAs):

Knowledge of:

  • Gerontological/geriatric nursing theory and practice
  • Resident condition and changing medical/physical /psychological care needs
  • Effects of the aging process
  • Practices and procedures of team nursing
  • Practices and procedures for implementing treatment plans for resident/patient care
  • Practices and procedures of pharmacology and medicines
  • Federal, State and agency laws, rules and regulations governing general practical nursing practices and the security and control of medical supplies and medications and dispensing thereof

Skill in:

  • Practical nursing methods and techniques
  • Observing and reporting behavior and progress of residents/patients
  • Applying and interpreting State and agency laws and regulations governing geriatric nursing practices
  • Assisting in the development and implementation of patient care plans within a team nursing concept
  • Oral and written communication

Ability to:

  • Assess client needs and evaluate usefulness or suitability of resources
  • Work with difficult people; establish and maintain excellent working relationships with clients, client families, team member and service providers.
Selective Preference(s):

One or more years of experience in a skilled nursing/ long-term care facility

Pre-Employment Requirements:
  • Current or temporary license to practice as a LPN nurse in the State of Arizona
  • Current Negative TB skin test (Mantoux skin test) within the last twelve months or a written statement from a physician, physician’s assistant or a registered nurse practitioner indicating freedom from Tuberculosis, if in the past has had a positive skin test or Tuberculosis
  • Must be able to obtain and retain a fingerprint clearance card issued by the Arizona Department of Public Safety
  • Current CPR card that was obtained by physical assessment
  • May be required on drive on state duty; valid driver's license is required
