Position's Available :Fulltime 12 Hr. shifts 7P-7A

PRIMARY PURPOSE – The Licensed Practical Nurse participates in direct patient care, administers medications and helps with guidance of non-professional personnel. Provides prescribed medical treatment and personal care services to psychiatric patients in hospital. Works under the supervision of the Registered Nurse utilizing the nursing process.

EDUCATION -Graduate from an accredited school of nursing.

EXPERIENCE -Prefer one year of direct patient experience in an acute care setting.

CERTIFICATE/LICENSE - Current LPN licensure from the state of Kansas.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS/WORKING CONDITIONS

Position requires ability to regularly lift and or move up to 10 pounds, frequently lift and/or move up to 100 pounds, and occasionally lift and/or move more than 100 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision and depth perception. Regularly required to sit, stand, talk or hear, and smell; use hands to finger, handle or feel; and reach with hands and arms. Work is indoors and outdoors. Risk of blood, body fluid contamination. Activities must be conducted in a safe and secure environment and be approved by Unit Management.

DUTIES INCLUDE BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO

Demonstrates expertise in mental health promotion and maintenance of high quality comprehensive patient care.

Displays respect for patient’s integrity, patient information and patient rights.

Demonstrates expertise in the performance of tasks necessary to maintain a therapeutic milieu and optimum patient care.

Maintains a safe and comfortable unit. Escorts patients to and from scheduled activities in a safe and professional manner.

Performs all specific skills assigned including total nursing assessment of patients within 4 hours of admission, discharges, medication administration, direct patient care to assigned age groups in a complete and accurate manner.

Writes initial treatment plan. Assists with ongoing case management duties as assigned. Participates actively in ongoing treatment and discharge planning.

Demonstrates the ability to appropriately and safely use hospital and department specific equipment.

Prepares equipment and aids physician during treatments and examinations of patients.

Observes patient, records significant conditions and reactions, and notifies supervisor or physician of patient's condition and reaction to drugs, treatments, and significant incidents. Charts patient information according to hospital standard.

Provides patient and family education. Leads prescribed individual or group education sessions as part of specific therapeutic procedures.

May rotate among various units as needed or directed.

Assists with pre and post ECT preparation and care according to established policy and procedure.

Assists with maintaining the cleanliness of the unit.

Maintains high level of interpersonal relationships with program staff.

Utilizes appropriate skills in telephone etiquette when answering the telephone, making sure to record correct messages and pass along to appropriate staff, including patient inquiries.

Maintains unit filing and paperwork system, if assigned by Nurse Manager or Charge Nurse.

Maintains patients activities of daily living.

Assists in providing data based admission process for each patient.

Assists in writing initial treatment plan under supervision of registered nurse.

Assists with required administrative paperwork requirements

Takes and records patient’s vital signs and implements CIWA (Clinical Institute Withdrawal Assessment - Alcohol) and COWS (Clinical Opiate Withdrawal Scale) screenings per doctor’s orders. Provides direct nursing care and administers specified medication, orally or by subcutaneous or intermuscular injection, and notes time and amount on patient chart

Provides accurate, pertinent medical record documentation throughout patient stay

Observes patients and reports adverse reactions to medication or treatment to medical personnel in charge

Assembles and uses such equipment as catheters, glucometers, and oxygen supplies

Collects samples, such as urine, and sputum, from patients for testing if requested

Prepares or examines food trays for prescribed diet and feeds patients. Records food and fluid intake and output

Leads prescribed individual or group education sessions as part of specific therapeutic procedures.

Assists patients with ambulation as necessary, observes approved safety procedures.

Intervenes to restrain violent or potentially violent or suicidal patients by verbal or physical means as trained in a therapeutic manner

Helps patients with their personal hygiene such as bathing, keeping beds, clothing and living area clean

Demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and ability to therapeutically work with the specific patient population served—child, adolescent, adult, and senior adult

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Nursing process; critical thinking, medications and treatments, growth and development, disease processes, anatomy and physiology.

Quality communication skills; time management skills; good organization skills and able to act on multiple tasks.

BLS (Basic Life Support and STARR (Safe Training and Responsible Restraints) training required, and kept current.

Participates in professional development (i.e. completing certification, educational milestone, giving presentations, etc.)

Recognizes the importance that diversity/cultural beliefs have when delivering care to the populations served
