Job summary

The Center for Alcohol & Drug Treatment in Duluth, MN is seeking a qualified substance use disorder counselor to join our in-person team. Under indirect supervision, you will provide counseling services to individuals, groups, and families as defined by the 12 Core Functions and Minnesota statutes.

Responsibilities include conducting screenings and assessments, developing treatment plans, coordinating referrals, maintaining records, and collaborating with the treatment team to support client

Qualifications

• Licensed Alcohol and Drug Counselor (LADC) or ADC-T eligibility
• CPR and First Aid certification or obtained before direct patient contact
• Background studies completed per Minnesota DHS requirements
• Bachelor’s degree in Social Work, Nursing, Sociology, Human Services, or Psychology (or registered nurse) with required core-function hours and supervised experience

Responsibilities

• Provide SUD counseling per the 12 Core Functions.
• Follow CADT policies, procedures, and duties.
• Build relationships with referral sources and community agencies.
• Diagnose substance use disorders.
• Meet with families to identify service needs and referrals.
• Participate in team staffing, meetings, and consultations.
• Maintain records per policy and licensing regulations.
• Act as a productive member of the treatment team.
• Pursue ongoing skills development and training.
• Maintain a professional demeanor within agency and community.
• Participate in training sessions and workshops to enhance skills.

Summary

Under indirect supervision, this individual provides a range of substance use disorder counseling services to individuals, groups, and/or families as appropriate to the specific expectations of the position. This individual typically works under indirect guidance of a clinical professional within the environment of a paraprofessional staff, and new employees as required.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

• Provide substance use disorder counseling services as defined in the 12 Core Functions as stated in Minnesota Statutes Chapter 148F:
• CORE FUNCTIONS – screening; intake; orientation; assessment; treatment planning; counseling (group, individual and family); case management; crisis intervention; client education; referral; reports; recordkeeping; and consultation with other professionals regarding client treatment and services.
• Follow and support CADT’s philosophy, policies, procedures, and job responsibilities.
• Develop and maintain appropriate professional relationships with referral sources and community agencies.
• Diagnose substance use disorders.
• Meet with families to identify needs for services and to make appropriate referrals.
• Participate in meetings – team staffing, staff meetings and consultations.
• Maintain records according to CADT policy and procedures, and licensing regulations.
• Work as an active and effective member of the treatment team.
• Demonstrate interest and willingness to increase skills and knowledge regarding substance use disorders and participate in activities that advance the field of substance use disorder treatment.
• Maintain a professional demeanor within the agency and the community.
• May participate in training sessions and workshops to enhance treatment skills.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

• Must be a Licensed Alcohol and Drug Counselor. (LADC)
• Or have a temporary permit. (ADC-T)
• Or be exempt from licensure under Minnesota Statutes Chapter 148F.
• Must document competence in screening for and working with mental health problems through a 12-hour education program and experience.
• Must be CPR and First Aid certified or obtain it before direct patient contact.
• Must pass background studies issued by the Minnesota Department of Human Services.

Individual exempt from MN Statues chapter 148F must complete the following:

• Bachelor’s degree with a major in Social Work, Nursing, Sociology, Human Services, or Psychology; or must be a registered nurse;
• A minimum of 120 hours of classroom instruction in which each of the core functions as listed in 148F are covered; and
• Must complete 440 hours of supervised experience as an alcohol and drug counselor, either as a student or staff member.

Individuals with a temporary permit from the Board of Behavioral Health and Therapy may provide chemical dependency treatment service if they meet either of the requirements below:

• The individual with a temporary permit must be supervised by a licensed alcohol and drug counselor assigned by the license holder. The supervising licensed alcohol and drug counselor must document the amount and type of supervision provided at least on weekly basis. The supervision must relate to clinical practice.
• The individual with a temporary permit must be supervised by a Clinical Supervisor approved by the Board of Behavioral Health and Therapy. The supervision must be documented and meet the requirements of section 148F.04, subdivision 4.

Degree of Authority

Perform duties under the direct supervision of the Treatment Director, Clinical Supervisor, Assistant Medical Director, and the policies and procedures that govern activity at the Center for Alcohol & Drug Treatment.
