Job summary

Lovington Municipal Schools seeks a Library/Media Instructional Assistant to work with teachers and students in the library/media center. You will supervise students, assist in acquiring and maintaining equipment, and provide instructional support to reinforce library expectations.

You will help set up daily activities, monitor behavior, assist with assessments, and participate in staff development. Some duties include clerical tasks, safety responses, and collaboration with teachers on

Qualifications

Responsibilities

  • Oversees and supervises students during library/media activities.
  • Orders, maintains, and develops instructional equipment and supplies for library/media use.
  • Sets up library/media supplies for daily activities and events; monitors equipment for loss or damage and arranges repairs.
  • Provides instructional support by explaining and reinforcing library/media expectations.
  • Maintains pupil behavior standards conducive to a positive learning environment.
  • Assists classroom teachers in evaluating pupil growth for progress reports.
  • Participates in staff or professional development activities.
  • Provide students with immediate performance feedback on tasks.
  • Respond appropriately to immediate safety concerns.
  • Assist with clerical activities and supervision outside the classroom.
  • Maintain confidentiality and perform other related duties as assigned.

Library/Media Instructional Assistant

General Job Description

The Library/Media Instructional Assistant works in collaboration with the teacher to assist in the academic needs of students.

Qualifications
  • High school diploma or GED. Additional education and/or training desirable.
  • Possess or qualify for a New Mexico Level III Educational Assistant license.
  • Demonstrate aptitude for the work to be performed.
  • Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Superintendent may find appropriate and acceptable.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Oversees and supervises students during library/media activities.
  • Orders, maintains, and develops a variety of instructional equipment and supplies for use in library/mediaclasses.
  • Sets up the library/media supplies necessary for daily activities and events.Maintains surveillance over school-ownedequipment to prevent loss or abuse; makes minor adjustments and requests repairs for equipment as required.
  • Provides instructional support by explaining and reinforcing library/media expectations.
  • Establishes and maintains standards of pupil behavior needed to achieve an atmosphere conducive to learning and an orderly environment.
  • Assists classroom teacher in evaluation of pupils' growth and performance for progress reports and report cards.
  • Participates in appropriate staff or professional development.
  • Provide students with immediate performance feedback on their tasks
  • Respond appropriately to immediate safety concerns
  • Solve routine problems involving students
  • Provide behavioral support in accordance with school wide guidelines including direction, prompting, verbal and non-verbal cues, and other interventions to assist students in maintaining appropriate behavior in the school environment
  • Perform light clerical activities
  • Participate in the supervision of students outside the classroom as required; yard, library, common areas, small group spaces, bus, excursions
  • Maintain confidentiality
  • Perform other related duties as assigned
Additional Duties and Responsibilities
  • Work under supervision of certified teacher(s), prepare for classroom activities.
  • Monitor independent study and supplementary work for students
  • Collaborate with teachers relating to the I.E.P. objectives and/or modifications, and participate in lessons and classroom activities as related to the students
  • Manage students, particularly students with I.E.P.s or who are English language learners
  • Assist teacher with observing, recording and charting behavior
  • Assist teacher with crisis, problem and behavior management
  • Implement containment strategies to prevent injury to student or others
  • Maintain appropriate records for teacher
  • Assist students with physical needs, including but not limited to: assisting with orthopedic limitations, toileting, eating and ensuring they receive medication as directed by their physician
  • Work with audio/visual equipment, computers and assistive technology particularly as related to the I.E.P. accommodations and modifications
  • Administers alternative assessments as appropriate
  • Other tasks as may be deemed appropriate and necessary by the immediate supervisor, the principal and/or the Superintendent.
Physical Requirements

Sitting, standing, lifting and carrying (up to 50 pounds), reaching, squatting, climbing stairs, kneeling, must be able to see and hear the entire classroom, and moving light furniture may be required.

Safety & Health
  • Knowledge of universal hygiene precautions.
Equipment/Material Handled

Must know how to properly operate, or be willing to learn to operate, all multimedia equipment including current technology. Fax machine, laminator, book binders, paper cutters, etc.

Work Environment

Must be able to work within various degrees of noise, temperature, and air quality. Job responsibilities require both inside and outside assignments. Interruptions of work are routine. Flexibility and patience are required. Must be self-motivated and able to complete job assignment without direct supervision. After hours work may be required. May make site or home visits when needed and appropriate. Must be able to work under stressful conditions.
