Job summary

Clark Memorial Library in Bethany, CT is seeking a Library Director to lead operations, programs, and strategy for a public library serving the community. The role oversees staff, finances, facilities, and policy development while partnering with the Bethany Library Association and local boards.

The successful candidate will have an MLS/MLIS from an ALA-accredited program, a track record of grant administration, and demonstrated collaboration with community partners.

Public Library

Founded in 1937, Clark Memorial Library is the public association library serving Bethany, Connecticut. Governed by the non-profit Bethany Library Association and a Board of Directors, the mission of the Library is to serve the community and promote reading and learning for residents of all ages. The Library Director is charged with achieving this mission through the ongoing development and support of a library responsive to our community’s needs for information, education, and recreation. Through collaboration with the governing Board of Directors, the Library Director develops programs and policies, monitors patron services, oversees finance and operations, including the physical facility and human resources encompassing hiring, training and supervision of staff while serving as the public face of the library. The 2025-2028 Library strategic plan provides additional information about the Bethany community and the library.

• Support the development and assessment of Library programs, services, collections, and policies
• Ensure efficient and responsible financial management of the budget
• Manage Library human resources
• Ensure the Library maintains a close connection with the Bethany community
• Oversee all aspects of the physical plant, grounds, and equipment
• Participate in Association Board governance and with appropriate local, state, and consortial organizations

Required experience and education:

• Master’s degree in Library Science or Library and Information Science accredited by the American Library Association
• Demonstrated success as a collaborative community partner
• Experience in short- and long-term programming/project management
• Knowledge/expertise in networked library environments
• Three years of progressive library administration experience in a public library setting that includes supervisory capacity or a combination of experience and education which demonstrates success in this role
• Demonstrated success in the application, receipt and administration of grants

Compensation and benefits:

This is a full-time salaried position (37 hours a week) with a flexible schedule and 25 days annual leave along with 3 personal days.Salary range of$80,000 - $85,000. Within the salary range, the successful candidate will be paid commensurate with experience. Benefits stipend in lieu of medical insurance and retirement benefits.
