Job summary

The Municipality of Anchorage's Library department is seeking an entry-level library assistant to process materials, check items in and out, and help patrons locate resources.

This position requires a high school diploma or equivalent, six months of customer service experience, and the ability to lift up to 50 pounds. After probation, limited remote work may be considered at management's discretion.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma, GED, or equivalent and six (6) months of customer service experience volunteer or paid.
  • Employment is conditional upon satisfactory completion of a national criminal background investigation.
  • Capability to bend, stoop, stretch, lift boxes weighing up to fifty (50) pounds, push fully loaded book trucks, and stand for up to four (4) hours at a time.
  • Must be able to provide identification information and be fingerprinted; fingerprint cards must be dated within thirty (30) days from date requested.
  • Processing fee for fingerprinting of $48.25 plus variable cost is the responsibility of the selected applicant and must be paid before beginning work.

  • Shelf read to ensure proper order.
  • Assist public in use of automated handling and self-check machines.

  • Aid customers with the use of library website and catalog.
  • Direct customers to the location of library materials.
  • Maintain library order, straightening shelves, refilling displays, checking computers and other equipment.
  • Establish and maintain effective relations with coworkers and the public; treat everyone with honesty, respect, and fairness.
  • Assist in Anchorage Public Library's (APL) diversity and inclusiveness efforts.
  • Ensure excellent customer service and a positive user experience while being an efficient member of the team.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Job Information

Open to the general public and any current Municipal employee.

This position is represented by the Anchorage Municipal Employee Association (AMEA) and is subject to the provisions of the current agreement between the Municipality of Anchorage and the Union.

DEPARTMENT: Library

HOURS OF WORK: Hours vary, Monday through Sunday between the hours of 8:00 am to 8:00 pm.

LOCATION: 3600 Denali Street

Employees who are hired or rehired to any position shall be placed at the entrance pay step, and advancement from the entrance step to the maximum step within a pay grade shall be by successive steps.

Remote work schedule opportunities (telecommuting) may be considered after successful completion of probation, at the discretion of management and with the approval of the department head. Not all positions are eligible for remote work (telecommuting) per P&P 40-40.

  • Employment is conditional upon a satisfactory Municipal Employment Office conducted background check, which encompasses criminal history, verifying education, and verifying dates of employment.
  • Capability to bend, stoop, stretch, lift boxes weighing up to fifty (50) pounds, push fully loaded book trucks, and stand for up to four (4) hours at a time.
  • Must be able to provide identification information and be fingerprinted; fingerprint cards must be dated within thirty (30) days from date requested.

Veteran Preference

Veterans or who wish to be considered for interview preference as permitted in Municipal Personnel Rules 3.30.031 D must attach to the application a copy of their DD Form 214, DD Form 256, NGB Form 22, or a letter from the US Department of Veterans Affairs recognizing the person as a veteran. The attached documentation must show an honorable discharge or general (under honorable conditions) discharge. The minimum qualifications of the position must be met for preference consideration.

Individuals currently serving as a member in good standing in the National Guard or the organized military reserves who wish to be considered for interview preference as permitted in Municipal Personnel Rules 3.30.031 D must attach proof of current service. Proof of current service can be shown by submission of a statement of service which, at a minimum, shows full name, date of birth, Social Security Number, date service began, branch of service, rank, name of command providing the information, unit of assignment. The statement must be on a form or letterhead of the individual’s command organization and show the name, signature, title and contact information for the signer providing the statement of service. The minimum qualifications of the position must be met for preference consideration.
