Responsibilities Overview

The Librarian provides professional library services that integrate reference and reader's advisory, collection development, programming, and community outreach to support the Library’s mission of lifelong learning. This position assists patrons in locating information and resources, recommends reading and viewing materials, and supports access to digital services. The Librarian plans and delivers programs for diverse audiences, promotes services through multiple channels, and contributes to policy development and collection maintenance.

The position reports to the Library Services Manager and may be assigned to Adult Services or Youth Services, with work coordinated alongside the Adult Services Librarian or Youth Services Librarian, depending on assignment.

This classification is distinguished from the Adult Services Librarian and Youth Services Librarian in that those positions serve as subject-area leads with responsibility for strategic planning, specialized collection development, and oversight of service delivery within their respective domains. The Librarian performs professional-level work across both adult and youth service areas but does not hold primary responsibility for system-wide program leadership or specialized subject expertise.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

The following tasks are representative and are not to be considered all-inclusive.

  • Provides reference and reader's advisory by interviewing customers to determine specific information needs, assisting with locating information and resources, and guiding reading and viewing choices based on interest. The Librarian supports customer use of technology as needed to access library resources and maintains awareness of public service demand to assist at service points when needed.
  • Develops and delivers programming for groups of varied ages, producing or procuring supplies and props, performing or recruiting performers, coordinating onsite events, serving as a point of contact, and promoting programs via website content, social media postings, and print materials.
  • Performs for groups as appropriate to program design.
  • Conducts community outreach by establishing and cultivating partnerships with local schools, care facilities, and community groups, and visiting local facilities to promote library programming and services.
  • Carries out collection development and maintenance by identifying and ordering materials using established selection and ordering tools, performing weeding of outdated or low-use materials, reordering replacements as needed, and assisting with development of collection policies that guide acquisitions and deselection.
  • Provides direct public service at library desks, including reference transactions, reader's advisory, and routine circulation activities such as customer registration, check-in and check-out of materials, placing holds, and monitoring desk volumes to ensure responsive service.
  • Maintains a working knowledge of the library computing environment and the countywide library computer system, troubleshoots simple problems for the public, escalates technical issues appropriately, and reports unresolved problems to a supervisor.
  • Contributes to the Library’s marketing by helping develop messages and promotional materials that communicate services and programs to the public across channels.
  • Complete other tasks as assigned.
