Job summary

The Iowa Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), Division of State-Operated Specialty Care, Bureau of Woodward Resource Center (WRC) is seeking an Activities Specialist to join our team. This full-time role supports leisure services by planning and directing programs to promote socialization, self-expression, and skill development for individuals in residential care.

Qualifications

  • Graduation from an accredited college or university with major course work in art, the behavioral/social sciences, industrial therapy, music, occupational therapy, recreation, rehabilitation, therapeutic recreation, or other closely related fields.
  • Experience at a level comparable to Activities Assistant may substitute for education as described.
  • May be required to obtain a CDL and endorsements after hire.

Responsibilities

  • Direct, plan, and coordinate leisure programs for one-on-one projects and small groups to develop socialization and new skills.
  • Monitor ongoing participation of clients in the community to ensure growth and skill development.
  • Teach daily living, communication, leisure, and vocational skills following written procedures and modeling pro-social behavior.
  • Perform all aspects of the individualized active treatment program for assigned individuals.
  • Liaise between leisure department and interdisciplinary team to ensure ongoing programming and goal development.
  • Attend department meetings to discuss issues and coordinate activities with other specialists.
  • Maintain supplies and inventory for leisure activities at houses in the caseload.
  • Prepare trips, manage the budget per person, and coordinate with offices; turn in receipts per guidelines.
