Job summary

Michigan Farm Bureau is seeking a Legislative Counsel to advocate for insurance and agricultural policy before the Michigan Legislature and state agencies. The role develops legislative and regulatory strategies, conducts policy research, and advances priorities through relationships with policymakers and stakeholders.

Responsibilities include advising the CEO on insurance issues, coordinating cross-affiliate advocacy, and delivering strategic recommendations based on public policy analysis.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree required, insurance or agriculture related field or public affairs management preferred.
  • 4–6 years' experience in the public policy arena required.
  • Experience in insurance or agricultural related field preferred.
  • Ability to utilize evolving technology, software systems, and digital tools.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills; ability to present to broad audiences.

Legislative Counsel

To serve as a legislative advocate for Michigan Farm Bureau, its members, and the Michigan Farm Bureau Family of Companies by protecting and advancing the interests of assigned insurance and agricultural issues before the Michigan Legislature, executive branch agencies, and regulatory bodies. The Legislative Counsel develops and implements legislative and regulatory strategies; researches and analyzes public policy; and advances the organization's priorities through effective advocacy, relationship building, and subject matter expertise while representing Michigan Farm Bureau and the Family of Companies on insurance and agricultural policy issues before policymakers, coalition partners, regulatory officials, and other stakeholders.

Develop and implement legislative and regulatory strategies to advance Michigan Farm Bureau policy and the interests of the Michigan Farm Bureau Family of Companies. Research, analyze, and influence legislation, administrative rules, and regulatory actions consistent with policy established by the membership and interpreted by the Michigan Farm Bureau Board of Directors.

Advocate on assigned insurance, agricultural, and public policy issues before the Michigan Legislature, Governor's Office, state departments, agencies, boards, commissions, and other governmental entities. Build and maintain effective relationships with elected officials, regulators, industry representatives, coalition partners, and other stakeholders.

Provide legislative, regulatory, and public policy analysis and strategic recommendations to the Chief Executive Officer of Farm Bureau Insurance on issues affecting insurance operations and affiliated businesses.

Coordinate legislative and regulatory advocacy efforts among Michigan Farm Bureau, Farm Bureau Insurance, and other affiliated companies to promote a unified public policy strategy.

  • Bachelor's degree required, with preference for an insurance or agriculture related field or public affairs management.
  • Working knowledge of the legislative and regulatory process normally attained from four to six years' experience in the public policy arena required.
  • Experience in an insurance or agricultural related field preferred.
  • Ability to utilize evolving technology, software systems, and digital tools.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, and the ability to make presentations to a wide range of audiences.
