FanDuel is seeking a Manager in Legal Operations to lead outside counsel management, including eBilling via Brightflag, budget planning, and spend analytics. You will partner with Finance, Accounting, Procurement and Legal leadership to optimize relationships with law firms and drive cost transparency.

The role requires strong negotiation, stakeholder management, and data-driven decision making within a fast-paced, startup-like environment.

Qualifications

  • Minimum 6+ years in Legal Operations, Finance, or related roles handling outside counsel and eBilling.
  • 3–4 years of in-depth Brightflag experience (admin, reporting, configuration).
  • Proven success leading global or matrixed legal spend management programs.

Responsibilities

  • Lead outside counsel management strategy, including billing guidelines, rate structures and metrics.
  • Project-manage the strategic planning and budgeting for outside counsel spend.
  • Collaborate with IT, Finance, Procurement and AP to improve systems and data integrity.
  • Develop and maintain dashboards and analytics to inform leadership decisions.
  • Foster continuous improvement and strong cross-functional partnerships across Legal & Compliance.

This role is a key member of FanDuel’s dynamic Legal Operations team, which supports process improvement, operational excellence, and innovation across the Legal and Compliance organization. The ideal candidate brings deep expertise in outside counsel management, the Brightflag eBilling platform, and matter management, combined with the strategic vision to lead and continuously enhance our outside counsel management program.

As a critical cross-functional partner, this role collaborates closely with outside counsel, Finance, Accounting, Procurement, and Legal leadership, requiring exceptional stakeholder management, negotiation, and relationship-building skills. The Manager will lead the active management of outside counsel performance and spend, including rate benchmarking, law firm evaluation metrics, and budgeting and forecasting.

A strong foundation in data analysis is essential to identify trends, uncover savings opportunities, and translate insights into actionable recommendations. Experience within the internet, technology, or media industries, or with clients in those sectors, is highly desirable. Above all, success in this role requires superior analytical, strategic, and communication skills, a collaborative mindset, and a strong work ethic. The Manager will play a pivotal role in setting and driving strategic initiatives, ensuring compliance, and fostering a culture of partnership and continuous improvement within the Legal organization and across FanDuel.

THE GAME PLAN
  • Drive forward the execution of outside counsel management strategy, aligning on billing guidelines, rate structures and performance metrics
  • Shape and evolve the development of the 1-3 year strategy for outside counsel management and operational transformation within Legal Operations
  • Participate in and project manage the strategic planning and budgeting processes for outside counsel spend, driving accountability and alignment with corporate financial goals.
  • Partner with stakeholders to support firm relationship governance, promoting best practices, cost transparency and partnership value.
  • Conduct spend benchmarking and market analysis to inform rate negotiations and educate our matter leads.
  • Oversee reporting and analytics within Brightflag to deliver actionable spend insights and business intelligence to Legal leadership.
  • Manage invoice review, approval workflows, accruals, and budgeting processes to ensure compliance with billing guidelines and financial accuracy.
  • Collaborate with IT, Finance, Procurement and Accounts Payable stakeholders to enhance system capabilities and data integrity.
  • Proactively engage with the legal operations community, industry forums and vendor networks to identify emerging best practices and translate external insights into improvements across FanDuel's Legal Operations function
  • Assist with vendor management and support the vendor negotiation process.
  • Contribute to and project manage legal projects, ensuring timely and successful completion.
  • Develop project plans, timelines, and deliverables, and track progress against goals.
  • Support senior leaders to develop and implement the legal department’s strategic plan.
  • Provide insights and recommendations to improve legal processes and support business objectives.
  • Foster a culture of continuous improvement, collaboration, and professional growth.
  • Operate with a strong bias for action, proactively identifying opportunities, driving initiatives forward independently, and exercising sound judgement on when to elevate or seek alignment.
  • Build trusted relationships across the Legal and Compliance organization, influencing lawyers and business stakeholders to adopt best practices and program improvements.
  • Document processes, develop workflow diagrams and create clear visual artefacts to support operational improvements and stakeholder understanding.
  • Apply a strong commercial and financial understanding of legal services delivery, billing models and spend management to optimize value from outside counsel relationships.
THE STATS
  • 6+ years of experience in Legal Operations, Finance, or related roles, with deep expertise in outside counsel management and eBilling.
  • 3-4 years of in depth Brightflag experience at a minimum (system administration, reporting, and configuration).
  • Proven success leading cross-functional legal spend management programs in a global or matrixed environment.
  • Strong financial acumen with expertise in budgeting, forecasting, and data analytics.
  • Demonstrated experience in law firm performance management, benchmarking, and billing guideline enforcement.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with diverse stakeholders.
  • Passion to work hard in a fast-paced, start-up environment
  • Bachelor’s degree required; MBA, or equivalent advanced degree preferred.
  • An exceptional team builder and team player, with a desire to be a leader within FanDuel.

The applicable salary range for this position is $94,000 - $142,000 USD, which is dependent on a variety of factors including relevant experience, location, business needs and market demand. This role may offer the following benefits: medical, vision, and dental insurance; life insurance; disability insurance; a 401(k) matching program; among other employee benefits. This role may also be eligible for short-term or long-term incentive compensation, including, but not limited to, cash bonuses and stock program participation. This role includes paid personal time off and 14 paid company holidays. FanDuel offers paid sick time in accordance with all applicable state and federal laws.
