Job summary

The Los Angeles City Attorney's Office – Workers’ Compensation Division seeks a Legal Assistant to support Division Attorneys and coordinate with the City’s personnel. The role oversees support staff from inception through final resolution, reviewing claims for eligibility and potential fraud, and preparing cases for trial or appeal.

It involves coordinating depositions, medical examinations, and reviewing awards to determine whether to appeal.

Qualifications

• Experience handling workers’ compensation matters and familiarity with legal procedures.
• Proven writing ability and proficiency in Word and Westlaw.
• Experience in civil law, including workers’ compensation litigation, is desirable.

Responsibilities

• Review new and existing claims to determine eligibility and fraud indicators.
• Prepare cases for trial and/or appeal and coordinate depositions.
• Arrange applicants’ medical examinations and manage scheduling.
• Review WCAB/ADR awards to decide on appeals or payment processing.
• Maintain professional telephone contact with the public, insurers, and City departments.
