Salary: Starting at $67,025 + $2,600 Spec. Ed. Stipend
Reports to: Building Principal

Certification Required: Special Education

Any of the listed Special Education certifications are required.

Summary

Under the supervision of the School Principal and Director of Special Services, the Special Ed. Teacher will be responsible for using student data to develop meaningful learning opportunities for students. The special ed. teacher will be responsible for planning an effective program of instruction based on the components of the district curriculum and state/national standards associated with content and / or specific subject matter. This position works collaboratively with the secondary principals and grade level partners to set strategic academic priorities and implement programs and procedures to support, implement and achieve district academic and operational objectives.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

This position interfaces with students, parents, faculty and the community on a continual basis and requires a high degree of interpersonal skill and human relations ability. All job functions are to be executed with high quality customer service. Customers include students, parents, staff, teachers and community members. Examples demonstrative of high quality service may include, but are not limited to prompt responses to inquiries, professional and courteous verbal and non-verbal communication, and proactive problem solving.

  • Work in cooperation with the school principal and special education team to support the instructional programs and curriculum goals of the school district.
  • Implement the appropriate curriculum program in compliance with district policy and guidelines.
  • Establish a consistent instructional schedule and behavior management system that supports an orderly learning environment.
  • Establish appropriate relationships with students to promote appropriate social behaviors for the school environment.
  • Work with School Principal and grade level partner(s) to review assessment data to establish goals for strategic instruction.
  • Provide tiered interventions to targeted groups based on data, including differentiated instruction.
  • Collect data and maintain adequate records related to attendance and pupil progress.
  • Interpret, analyze and problem solve situations within your classroom and school to find effective resolve.
  • Implement an effective referral process for academic student assistance.
  • Attend meetings designed to plan programming for students with IEPs or academic intervention plans.
  • Adhere to all guidelines associated with IEP plans, 504 plans or individual health care plans for students.
  • Administer PSSA tests and other mandated testing programs at the secondary level.
  • Generate accurate, efficient, and timely communications with all constituents to include, but not be limited to newsletters, websites, blogs or mass electronic distributions such as text and email blasts.
  • Provide orientation for new students.
  • Order, maintain and inventory materials required for the implementation of the instructional program.
  • Cooperate with the district public relations coordinator to provide appropriate coverage for classroom events or activities.
  • Participate with organizations who support the efforts of the overall school program.
  • Cooperate with the director of technology to maximize the effective utilization of available technologies.
Other Duties
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Building Principal or Special Education Supervisor.
  • Support class list assignments and the scheduling process within the building.
  • Adhere to the laws, policies, procedures and ethical standards associated with the teaching profession.
Qualifications
  • Experience as a teacher is considered advantageous.
  • Active Instructional Certificate from the Pennsylvania Department of Education (PDE) in Special Education (Grades K-12).
  • Alternative Eligibility: A candidate with pending certification from PDE may submit a college or university letter confirming:
    • Completion of a PDE-approved teacher preparation program.
    • Passing scores on all required certification examinations.
General Skills and Capabilities
  • Appropriate keyboarding skills
  • Proficiencies with technological communication tools including, but not limited to word processing, internet access and utilization and the full and effective use of the district's email software
  • Ability to communicate well at all organizational levels
  • Ability to exercise good judgment in prioritizing tasks and decision making

Physical Requirements and Sensory Abilities
  • Repetitive movement of fingers and hands for keyboarding
