Qualifications

  • Requires a high school diploma; Level 2 requires a college degree in a relevant field.
  • Must obtain Brevard County Public School Vendor Security Clearance and pass Level 2 Background Check.
  • Current CPR or First Aid certification or ability to obtain quickly after hire.
  • Willing to work a flexible schedule including nights, weekends, and holidays.
  • Able to work outdoors in physically demanding conditions.
  • Valid driver's license and 21 years of age to operate zoo vehicles.

Responsibilities

  • Deliver a range of programs, including classroom presentations onsite and offsite, camps, family classes.
  • Collaborate with the Conservation Learning team to provide engaging experiences.
  • Transport materials and staff using a Zoo vehicle.
  • Assist in presenting animal demonstrations and interpret animal experiences.
  • Deliver excellent guest service and help develop new programming.

Position: Learning Programs Facilitator (Level 1 & Level 2) Status: Full-time FLSA hourly non-exempt Department: Conservation Learning Reports to: Senior Manager, School Programs and Community Engagement

POSITION OVERVIEW

Located along the Space Coast in Melbourne, Florida, Brevard Zoo is an AZA-accredited facility with a diverse collection of over 900 animals representing nearly 200 species. It is also home to the Sea Turtle Healing Center for rehabilitation of wild marine turtles. Brevard Zoo is well‑known for its strong conservation ethic and unique attractions, such as kayaking through the Africa area, giraffe feeding, and rhinoceros and various other animal encounters.

The Learning Programs Facilitator is responsible for providing unique and high‑quality learning opportunities for a diverse range of audiences to foster appreciation, knowledge, and care for wildlife and their habitats. This position will deliver a variety of programs, including classroom presentations on and offsite, in‑Zoo experiences, and planned guest engagement moments.

QUALIFICATIONS
REQUIRED:
  • High school diploma; Level 2 requires a college degree in a relevant field of study.
  • Must be able to acquire Brevard County Public School Vendor Security Clearance and pass a Level 2 Background Check.
  • Current CPR or First Aid certification (or ability to obtain certification quickly after hire).
  • Willingness and ability to work a flexible schedule, including nights, weekends, and holidays.
  • Ability to work in physically demanding conditions, including outdoors for long periods of time.
  • Valid Driver's License and 21 years of age to operate Zoo vehicles
PREFERRED/DESIRED:
  • Ideal candidates will have previous experience in informal learning gained through volunteer activities, internships, or professional experience; Level 2 requires at least one year of relevant professional experience.
PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
  • Serve as a program facilitator for a wide range of programs, including but not limited to school programs (preK-high school) onsite and offsite, camps, family classes, adult programming, interpretive experiences, evening programs, overnights and other fee‑based experiences.
  • Act as part of the larger Conservation Learning team to provide learning experiences onsite and offsite.
  • Must be able to operate a Zoo vehicle to transport materials/staff to offsite programming locations.
  • Must be able to lift heavy (50lbs) items in and out of vehicles.
  • Under the direction of the Animal Ambassador care team, present animal demonstrations during programs and interpret animal experiences within the Zoo.
  • Share Brevard Zoo's joy of nature through enthusiastic interactions with guests and local community members.
  • Provide excellent customer service to all guests.
  • Assist in the development of new programming.
  • Provide general upkeep and cleanliness to all teaching and office spaces.
  • As a member of the Conservation Learning team, be able and willing to facilitate programs as needed.

  • Ability to lead learning programs intended for a wide range of audiences and ages in multiple settings.
  • Ability and comfort in handling a variety of animals in front of diverse audiences.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS/WORK ENVIRONMENT

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: (M) Medium Work Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 25 pounds of force frequently and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects as needed to move objects.

POTENTIAL ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS/HAZARDS: Indoor office environment most often with frequent movement outdoors. Exposure to extreme heat and weather conditions. Requires Sitting, Standing, Walking, Bending, Stooping, Kneeling, Finger Dexterity, Talking, Hearing, and Visual Acuity frequently.

WORK SCHEDULE: May be required to work weekends and nights as necessary.

TRAVEL: Position requires the routine and frequent use of a Zoo vehicle to travel to offsite programs.
