Job summary

The Learning Lead provides individualized and small-group academic support to help youth strengthen their skills, understand new concepts, complete assignments, and achieve their academic goals. This position plans and implements engaging lessons, enrichment activities, and supplemental programming while creating a welcoming and supportive learning environment.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Education or working toward an Education Degree.
  • Two years of current or previous work with elementary-aged children.

  • Support youth with behavioral challenges using positive behavioral strategies and follow established plans.
  • Ensure safety, supervision, and accurate attendance and records at the site.
  • Communicate updates and concerns to the Education Coordinator and families.

TITLE: Learning Lead

REPORTS TO: Education Coordinator

CLASSIFIED: Part Time, Non-Exempt

LOCATION: Brookings, SD

JOB SUMMARY:

The Learning Lead provides individualized and small-group academic support to help youth strengthen their skills, understand new concepts, complete assignments, and achieve their academic goals. This position plans and implements engaging lessons, enrichment activities, and supplemental programming while creating a welcoming and supportive learning environment. The Learning Lead also supervises assigned program areas, ensures the safety and well-being of members, supports positive behavior, and provides guidance to assigned staff. This position works collaboratively with Club staff, families, and classroom teachers to support member success and high-quality programming while upholding the Club's Mission, Values, and Positive Youth Development practices.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Support the academic growth, development, and overall progress of youth.
  • Demonstrate proficiency in assigned academic subject areas and assist in the development and implementation of engaging curriculum.
  • Maintain a growth mindset toward youth learning, professional development, and teaching practices.
  • Create and maintain a welcoming, inclusive, and engaging learning environment for all members.
  • Encourage problem-solving, curiosity, critical thinking, and independent learning.
  • Provide academic support to youth through homework assistance, special projects & programs, enrichment activities, and other educational opportunities.
  • Support youth experiencing behavioral challenges using positive behavioral strategies and ensure established Success Plans are followed and implemented consistently.
  • Ensure self and assigned staff consistently implement the 5 Key Elements for Positive Youth Development.
  • Model and uphold the Club Values of Excellence, Impact Driven, Teamwork, and Good Character.
  • Plan, coordinate, and implement high-quality academic enrichment programming throughout the year.
  • Maintain responsibility for the safety, supervision, and security of youth within the facility and during program activities.
  • Ensure the established program schedule is implemented consistently at the assigned site.
  • Ensure accurate attendance tracking and completion of required program documentation.
  • Maintain accurate, organized, and up-to-date records and documentation for the assigned site.
  • Communicate daily updates, concerns, and relevant information from assigned staff to the Education Coordinator.
  • Communicate concerns involving youth, families, classroom teachers, or program operations to the Education Coordinator to support effective problem-solving and quality service.
  • Provide guidance and support to assistant staff to ensure consistent, high-quality programming and serve as the primary point of contact when the Education Coordinator is unavailable.
  • Attend required monthly meetings, bi-weekly one-on-one meetings with the Education Coordinator, and bi-weekly team meetings.
  • Maintain professional and timely communication with parents and guardians regarding member progress, concerns, incidents, accidents, and other relevant program information.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
EMPLOYMENT QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Education or working toward an Education Degree.
  • Two years of current or previous work with elementary-aged children.
  • To adhere to the Club's training and values of Fun, Supportive Relationships, Recognition, Opportunities and Expectations, and Safety, it is necessary to comprehend, apply, and demonstrate behavior management principles as well as other youth treatment methods.
  • Provide your direct report guidance, feedback, and supervision to ensure they understand and demonstrate behavior management principles and other youth treatment methods.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
  • Must be of the mental and physical capacity to observe, interact, and communicate with youth, staff, volunteers, classroom teachers at your assigned school site, etc., at the Club to ensure the safety of the space and others, provide guidance and reflection per the Club priority outcomes and goals.
  • Ability to stand/sit for long periods throughout a shift.
  • Ability to operate various types of general office equipment including PC, telephone, copier, etc.
  • This position is considered to be safety-sensitive.
