Qualifications

DEPT OF HEALTH SERVICES

The Arizona State Hospital (ASH) provides inpatient psychiatric care to persons with serious mental illness who need long-term behavioral health care. ASH promotes hope and wellness for our patients and creates opportunities to participate in planning, delivering and evaluating services that assist with recovery. Job Summary

The Learning Lab Director serves as the strategic liaison between the Arizona State Hospital, our affiliated academic institutions and community volunteer partners. This role is responsible for overseeing the placements of students, interns and volunteers, ensuring that clinical (nursing, medical, and allied health) and non-clinical (quality, compliance, data analytics, etc…) students receive high-quality, safe, and compliant educational experiences at the Hospital, and that volunteers are assigned to tasks that directly promote patient progress in their recovery. The Director coordinates rotation logistics, manages academic partnership agreements, oversees student/volunteer orientation, and supports the operational readiness of internal learning environments.

Job Duties

• Build relationships with community partners to identify individuals interested in providing volunteer services at the Hospital to benefit our patients. Serve as the central point of contact for university and college clinical coordinators, faculty, and academic leadership.
• Coordinate, schedule, and track all clinical student placements, practicums, and preceptorships across hospital departments, balancing academic requests with unit capacity and preceptor availability.
• Collaborate with unit directors and clinical managers to identify, train, and support hospital staff serving as clinical preceptors. Direct the orientation process for incoming students, ensuring they understand hospital policies, patient safety protocols, and emergency procedures.
• Verify that all participants meet hospital health and security requirements (e.g., background checks, immunizations, drug screens, HIPAA training) prior to facility entry. Maintain and review active Affiliation Agreements with academic partners, ensuring all legal, liability, and compliance standards are up to date.
• Partner with IT to design and implement an online monitoring system to document student and intern placement and activities at the Hospital. Manage Electronic Medical Record (EMR) provisioning, training, and de-provisioning for student cohorts.
• Conduct roundings to evaluate the student learning environment and address real-time issues between students and hospital staff. Design and administer evaluations for students, faculty, and hospital preceptors to measure the effectiveness of the partnership.
• Analyze feedback data to identify trends, resolve recurring bottlenecks, and implement continuous improvement initiatives for the placement program.
• Other duties as assigned as related to the position (typically 5% - 10%)

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities (KSAs):

Knowledge Of:

• Strong understanding of HIPAA, OSHA, Joint Commission standards, and general hospital compliance requirements.

Skill In

• High-level interpersonal skills with the ability to navigate complex organizational structures and build trust with academic deans, hospital executives, and frontline staff.
• Exceptional organizational skills and detail orientation; ability to manage multiple overlapping schedules, cohorts, and compliance trackers simultaneously.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to confidently present information during orientations and resolve conflicts diplomatically
• Proficiency in clinical placement software (e.g., MyClinicalExchange, ACEMAPP), EMR systems (e.g., MyAvatar), and Google Workspace.

Ability To

• Experience with developing, implementing, monitoring and evaluating academic affiliation agreements to ensure compliance with regulatory standards.

Selective Preference(s)

Bachelor’s degree in Nursing, Healthcare Administration, Education, or a related field required. Master’s degree preferred. Minimum of 3–5 years of experience in healthcare operations, clinical education, or academic coordination. Experience managing clinical placements or working as clinical faculty is highly desirable.
