Job summary

FirstEnergy Corp is hiring an instructional designer to partner with HR and business units to design and deliver effective learning solutions. The role focuses on applying ADDIE and adult learning principles, developing materials, and supporting LMS activities across instructor-led, virtual, and web-based formats.

The position emphasizes collaboration, project coordination, and staying current with accessibility standards and emerging learning technologies, with on-site work in Harrisburg, PA.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree as listed or seven years' relevant work experience in lieu
  • Knowledge of ADDIE, instructional design methodologies, and adult learning principles
  • Experience designing, delivering instructor-led, virtual, blended, and web-based learning
  • Experience with training technologies including eLearning authoring tools, virtual platforms, and video production
  • Experience supporting LMS activities (testing, reporting, tracking, troubleshooting)
  • Strong written, verbal, and visual communication; translate complex info for learners
  • Strong organizational and project coordination skills in fast-paced environments
  • Familiarity with accessibility standards and inclusive learning design
  • Experience analyzing LMS reports, surveys, completion data, and learning metrics
  • Experience creating and maintaining SOPs, job aids, system guides, governance docs

Responsibilities

  • Partner with HR, leadership, and business units to assess training needs and recommend solutions
  • Design and develop instructional materials (lesson plans, guides, job aids, assessments, e-learning modules)
  • Apply adult learning principles to create engaging, measurable experiences
  • Support LMS administration: setup, testing, tracking, reporting, maintenance
  • Coordinate training logistics and attendance tracking
  • Conduct QA reviews to ensure accuracy and accessibility
  • Maintain and update SharePoint sites and learning tech resources
  • Analyze LMS data and learner feedback to improve training effectiveness
  • Support LMS governance: access control, data integrity, audit readiness
  • Lead enterprise projects on employee development and learning technology adoption
  • Develop and deliver executive/ stakeholder presentations on complex topics
  • Stay current on learning trends and accessibility best practices
  • Travel as needed

About the Opportunity

This is an open position with FirstEnergy Service Co., a subsidiary of FirstEnergy Corp. [SC00This position reports to the Manager of Instructional Support Services and serves as a consulting partner to Human Resources, leadership, and business units to assess needs and support the design, development, delivery, implementation, and evaluation of learning solutions that enhance organizational effectiveness.

Responsibilities include:
  • Partner with HR, leadership, and business units to conduct performance and needs analyses, identify training and non-training solutions, and recommend approaches to close performance gaps.
  • Design and develop instructional materials, including lesson plans, participant materials, facilitator guides, job aids, assessments, examinations, web-based training modules, presentations, and visual aids.
  • Apply instructional design methodologies, adult learning principles, and effective facilitation practices to create engaging, relevant, and measurable learning experiences.
  • Support LMS administration activities, including course setup, testing, assignments, completion tracking, reporting, troubleshooting, and maintenance of accurate training records.
  • Coordinate training logistics, including facilities and equipment, scheduling, attendance tracking, training reports, measurement activities, survey results, and participation trend analysis.
  • Conduct quality assurance reviews of learning materials and technology-based training to ensure accuracy, functionality, accessibility, and alignment with learning objectives.
  • Maintain and update SharePoint sites and related learning technology resources to ensure learning and development information is accurate, accessible, and current.
  • Analyze LMS data, learner feedback, assessment results, completion trends, and other metrics to evaluate training effectiveness and recommend improvements.
  • Support LMS governance practices, including role-based access, data integrity, audit readiness, training assignment accuracy, and consistent administration of learning processes.
  • Lead and contribute to enterprise projects and initiatives focused on employee development, leadership development, process improvement, and learning technology adoption.
  • Develop and deliver presentations for varied audiences on complex topics, ensuring content is clear, relevant, accessible, and appropriately tailored.
  • Exercise independent judgment in managing complex projects, assignments, stakeholder feedback, timelines, deliverables, and competing priorities.
  • Stay current on adult learning trends, accessibility practices, emerging technologies, learning analytics, and instructional design best practices to support continuous improvement.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
  • Travel as needed.
Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in Learning, Instructional Design, Education, Human Resources, or a related discipline and a minimum of four years of relevant work experience required. In lieu of a bachelor's degree, a minimum of seven years of relevant work experience is required.

  • Demonstrated knowledge of the ADDIE model, instructional design methodologies, adult learning principles, and effective facilitation practices.
  • Experience designing, developing, and delivering instructor-led, virtual, blended, and web-based learning solutions.
  • Experience using training technologies to design, develop, and deliver learning content, including eLearning authoring tools, virtual learning platforms, and video production tools.
  • Experience supporting LMS activities such as course testing, reporting, completion tracking, assignments, troubleshooting, or training record maintenance.
  • Strong written, verbal, and visual communication skills, with the ability to translate complex information into clear, learner-centered materials.
  • Strong organizational and project coordination skills, including the ability to manage multiple priorities, timelines, stakeholder reviews, and deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
  • Experience with Articulate Storyline, Articulate Rise, Camtasia, Vyond, Adobe Creative Suite, Microsoft Teams, SharePoint, or similar learning and collaboration tools.
  • Strong technical aptitude with the ability to learn new systems, troubleshoot basic technology issues, document processes, and support end users.
  • Ability to work independently, collaborate across teams, exercise sound judgment, and build effective relationships with stakeholders at all levels.
  • Familiarity with accessibility standards and inclusive learning design practices, including captioning, readable design, and accessible course/document development.
  • Experience analyzing LMS reports, survey results, completion data, assessment results, and learning metrics to support data-informed decisions.
  • Experience creating and maintaining standard operating procedures, job aids, system guides, governance documentation, and administrative process documentation.
  • Experience supporting compliance-related training programs, audit readiness, training assignment processes, or learning governance practices.
  • Interest in emerging learning technologies, artificial intelligence, learning analytics, virtual or augmented reality, and continuous improvement of learning processes.
