Job summary

Salt Lake Community College seeks Learning Assistants to attend math sections, assist students with activities, and tutor outside class time. You will join paid trainings, weekly meetings, and a weekly pedagogy class, with flexible tutoring hours set by you.

Applicants should have recently completed the math course, be a current SLCC student, and maintain a 2.75 GPA. First-generation students are encouraged to apply.

Qualifications

• Passed math course in which applicant is applying to be a Learning Assistant or placed into a higher math course.
• Maintain a minimum GPA of 2.75.
• First-generation college student (neither parent has earned a 4-year degree).
• Applicant has recently taken the math class in which they are applying to be a Learning Assistant at SLCC.
• Applicant has attended SLCC for at least one semester.

Responsibilities

• Attend an assigned section of a math class and assist students with activities.
• Provide quality learning assistance to students enrolled in the class.
• Assist instructors with one-on-one planning meetings to keep students engaged.
• Provide feedback to students to encourage confidence and motivation.
• Work with groups to support and structure project-based assignments.
• Teach study skills, note-taking, and test-taking strategies as needed.
• Participate in trainings, development opportunities, and events when available.
• Maintain regular communication with supervisor and other Learning Assistants.
• Attend required weekly meetings with instructors and other Learning Assistants.
• Meet the minimum eligibility criteria for the role as described.

Job description

Learning Assistants are expected to attend an assigned section of a math class to assist students with activities, attend paid trainings, tutor students outside of class, attend weekly meetings with other SLCC Learning Assistants, and attend a weekly pedagogy class. Students may set their own schedule for tutoring students outside of class time. Expected weekly hours are 10-15.- Attend classes with students to establish connection/bonding with the instructors and the students.

• - Assist with classroom activities.
• - Provie quality learning assistance to students enrolled in an assigned section of a math class.
• - Assist instructors with one-on-one planning meetings to ensure that students are remaining engaged and absorbing material.
• - Provide feedback to students using positive reinforcement techniques to encourage, motivate, and build confidence in students.
• - Work with students in groups providing support and structure in project-based assignments and work with math manipulative classroom aides.
• - Teach students study skills, note-taking techniques, and test-taking strategies as needed.
• - Participate in training, development opportunities, and other events when available.
