Job summary

Mortenson is seeking a Lean Engineer I to join our teams and apply kaizen-based continuous improvement, 5S and Flow Construction to enhance safety, streamline processes, and improve project outcomes. You will partner with leadership and craft teams to gain buy-in for lean approaches and help sustain improvements onsite.

The role requires collaboration across diverse teams, planning and execution of improvement events, and active participation in promoting one-piece flow for self-perform work.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Construction Management, Construction Engineering, Engineering or related field by summer 2027.
  • Internship experience in construction or manufacturing.
  • Willing to be mobile/relocate frequently for project assignments.
  • Possess a current driver’s license and access to reliable transportation.
  • Have previous related internship experience.
  • Have basic understanding of construction and generally accepted business practices.
  • Demonstrate collaboration, communication, problem-solving, initiative and leadership.
  • Detail-oriented, organized and able to handle multiple priorities.

Responsibilities

As a Lean Engineer I, you will support project team with applying Mortenson’s kaizen-based continuous improvement approach, as well as 5S and Flow Construction, to enhance work safety, streamline processes, and improve project outcomes.

Responsibilities:
  • Partner closely with project leadership and craft workforce to establish trust and gain buy-in for lean approaches
  • Provide regular feedback to project leadership and the group lean leader on the application of lean approaches to assist in cross-project sharing, including craft workforce participation/engagement, the activities undertaken, and related outcomes
  • Effectively work and build relationships with those of diverse backgrounds and organizational levels
  • Support continuous improvement efforts onsite
    • Coordinate with the project team to plan and execute improvement events
    • Assist and facilitate portions of improvement events with the support of group and company experts
    • Provide support in reinforcing continuous improvement principles and ensuring ongoing application of essential tools after improvement events
    • Support forepersons on observing work, assessing adherence to standardized work, and addressing abnormalities effectively
    • Collaborate with forepersons to actively encourage crews to brainstorm and implement improvements on an ongoing basis
  • Support the project team, field leaders, and trade partners in applying 5S practices
    • Support the onboarding of new craft workforce and trade partners by communicating 5S standards
    • Create plans and resources to achieve 5S standards
  • Support flow and work management onsite
    • Actively participate in flow schedule development for relevant work phases
    • Support superintendents and forepersons to apply disciplined and consistent daily planning, work management, and learning approaches
    • Assist in promoting and maintaining continuous efforts towards one-piece flow for self-perform work and move away from batching practices
  • All other duties as assigned
Additional Information:
  • It is likely and anticipated for Mortenson team members to participate on traveling project assignments throughout their careers. Depending upon the operating group, frequent mobility may be required

The base compensation range for this role is $70,200 - $99,900.This position is eligible for a potential annual bonus. Base pay is positioned within the range based on several factors including an individual’s knowledge, skill and experience with consideration given to internal equity.
