Job summary

University of Wisconsin–Madison Field Day Lab is seeking a Lead Developer who blends strong software engineering with technical leadership. This role is roughly 70% hands-on development and 30% leadership, mentoring, and coordination across educational game projects.

The Lab creates educational games and digital tools for teaching and learning, collaborating with educators and researchers to design interactive experiences that blend game-based learning with academic research.

Qualifications

  • Minimum of 7 years of professional software development experience, including games/interactive apps.
  • Expertise with Unity and game development principles.
  • Proficient in C#; experience with JavaScript and Python; adaptable to new languages.
  • Experience independently developing game prototypes from concept to implementation.
  • Ability to read, understand, and refactor code efficiently.
  • Experience translating goals into technical implementation plans and solutions.
  • Experience leading technical decision-making for complex software projects.
  • Demonstrated leadership mentoring and coaching for software developers.
  • Experience breaking large projects into workstreams, estimating effort, and guiding teams to timely completion.
  • Ability to collaborate with designers, artists, producers, researchers, and educators.

Responsibilities

  • Prepares program documentation and training requirements.
  • Maintains and troubleshoots applications, systems, or websites.
  • Implements data structure and systems performance strategies.
  • Reviews design specifications, codes new applications, and enhances existing ones.
  • Develops or modifies technical specs for low-complexity projects using disciplined practices.
  • Tests and debugs programs and prepares systems test data.
