Job summary

Sargent & Lundy is seeking a Senior Transmission Design Engineer in the Richmond, VA area. The role focuses on designing high voltage transmission lines (69kV–500kV), mentoring design staff, and coordinating project design activities to meet client specs and industry codes.

You will prepare calculations and reports, review others' work, and ensure adherence to Sargent & Lundy's processes. A BS in engineering and 12+ years of transmission design experience are required.

Qualifications

• 12+ years of transmission design experience.
• BS degree from an ABET-accredited engineering program.
• Proficiency with PLS-CADD software.
• Experience preparing scopes of work, conceptual designs, design basis, equipment/material selection, and calculations/specifications.
• Experience working with clients on transmission lines from 69kV through 500kV.
• Familiarity with NESC, IEC, ASCE, ACI, IEEE and ANSI standards.
• Experience reviewing design drawings.

Responsibilities may include the following:

• Design transmission lines in the 69kV to 765kV range.
• Mentor and train less experienced design team members.
• Coordinate design activities to ensure installation and operations will comply with specifications, codes, and client requirements.
• Prepare reports and studies that present technical information in a clear and concise manner and meet client requirements and S&L formats.
• Perform independent reviews of work performed by others including calculations, drawing preparation, and transmission line models based in PLS-CADD.
• Adhere to Sargent & Lundy's System of Processes.

This role offers a hybrid work arrangement, with the expectation of spending three days a week in the office, giving you the flexibility to work remotely for two days.

Dependent upon your location, this opportunity offers a generous relocation package.

Qualifications

Essential skills and experience:

• BS degree from an ABET-accredited engineering program.
• 12 or more years of transmission design experience.
• Proficiency with PLS-CADD software.
• Experience must include preparation of scopes of work, development of conceptual designs, determination of design basis, the selection of equipment and materials, and the preparation and assembling of calculations and specifications.
• Experience working directly with clients on transmission lines from 69kV through 500kV.
• Knowledge of engineering standards including NESC, IEC, ASCE, ACI, IEEE and ANSI.
• Experience reviewing design drawings created by others.

Valued but not required skills and experience:

• PE license
• PMP certification
• Construction experience
• Familiarity with ArcGIS

• We also value additional learning, such as a minor, certificate, or other experience in Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence, Software Engineering, or related fields that enables effective oversight of automation and agentic AI-enabled engineering workflows.

Compensation Range

$134,546 - $205,557
