Job summary

Leidos is seeking a Lead Transmission Line Engineer in Portland, OR to manage design teams on high voltage projects and ensure compliance with NESC, ASCE, NEC, and related codes. You will drive multi-disciplinary projects from 34.5 kV to 765 kV and mentor engineers while contributing to grid modernization initiatives.

Ideal candidates bring 8+ years of experience, PLS-CADD/PLS-POLE mastery, and a strong client-facing skillset.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil, Electrical, or Mechanical Engineering; Civil preferred.
  • 8+ years of relevant experience with a Bachelor's degree, or 6+ years with a Master’s.
  • Expertise in PLS-CADD and PLS-POLE.
  • EIT certification.
  • Strong client communication; ability to serve as primary contact.
  • Willingness to work onsite; periodic travel may be required.
  • Ability and passion to mentor staff.

Responsibilities

  • Direct multiple design teams on projects and programs for multiple clients.
  • Develop and coach engineering talent; oversee staff performance and development.
  • Participate in leadership activities and strategic planning.
  • Create responses to RFPs and proposals; define scope and approach.
  • Foster continuous improvement through streamlined processes and automated tools.
  • Delegate tasks, forecast workload, and assist in recruiting.
  • Ensure high-quality deliverables by driving quality control processes.
  • Engage with clients to grow business and strengthen relationships.
  • Monitor portfolio health with Project Managers to ensure schedule and budget.

Overview

Lead Transmission Line Engineer to manage a collaborative, fast-paced team working on high voltage electric transmission line design projects for overhead and underground systems. Applies standards including NESC, ASCE, ACI, NEC, and other applicable codes for capital and maintenance projects from 34.5 kV to 765 kV. Roles include Lead Engineer and Technical Project Manager on multi-discipline projects, with opportunities to apply AI, automation, and digital design platforms to streamline grid modernization.

Responsibilities
  • Direct multiple design teams simultaneously on projects and programs for multiple clients.
  • Develop and coach engineering talent; oversee staff performance and professional development.
  • Participate in leadership activities within the Transmission Line Section and contribute to strategic planning.
  • Create responses to RFPs/RFIs/RFQs, including scope definition and proposal development.
  • Foster a growth mindset and drive continuous improvement through streamlined processes and automated tools.
  • Delegate tasks, forecast workload, and participate in recruiting to support growth goals.
  • Ensure high-quality deliverables by driving the project quality control process.
  • Engage with clients to grow business, strengthen relationships, and maximize opportunities.
  • Monitor portfolio health with Project Managers to ensure schedule and budget adherence.
What Sets You Apart (Required)
  • Bachelor's degree in Civil, Electrical, or Mechanical Engineering; Civil preferred
  • 8+ years of relevant experience with a Bachelor's degree, or 6+ years with a Master’s
  • Expertise in PLS-CADD and PLS-POLE
  • Engineer In Training (EIT) certification
  • Strong communication skills; ability to serve as primary client contact
  • Business acumen with a track record of meeting project performance metrics
  • Willingness to work onsite at Leidos or client offices; periodic travel may be required
  • Ability and passion to mentor staff
Favorable If You Have
  • 2+ years of supervising staff
  • Master’s degree in Structural Engineering
  • Experience with TOWER
  • P.E. certification or ability to obtain within 6 months
  • Experience with LPILE or FAD, Mathcad, AutoCAD or MicroStation, and GIS
Work Location

Ideal location: Portland, OR or Seattle, WA. Remote work considered for Pacific Northwest candidates. Relocation assistance to Portland may be available for qualified candidates.
