Job summary

Story Time Chess Maryland is seeking a Lead Teacher & Program Manager to guide our local program. You will teach the award-winning curriculum in classrooms and lead a team of tutors while coordinating day-to-day operations.

The role requires travel between school sites in Towson, Timonium, Owings Mills, Columbia, and Ellicott City. Salary ranges from $45,000 to $60,000, plus a $100 monthly fuel stipend, flexible scheduling, and paid training.

About The Role

We’re looking for an experienced educator to lead our Maryland program as our Lead Teacher & Program Manager - a role that is part teacher, part leader, and all about making magic happen in every classroom.

The Job Has Two Parts

• Classroom Instruction: You will teach our award-winning program in classrooms. The curriculum is fully designed and ready to deliver, allowing you to focus on engaging students rather than spending time on lesson planning.
• Team Leadership & Operations: You will lead and coach our team of fun, creative tutors and keep day-to-day operations running smoothly.

What You’ll Do

Teach great classes

• Deliver fun, engaging Story Time Chess lessons in schools and community programs across the Baltimore County and Howard County areas.
• Bring strong storytelling and classroom management skills to every class.
• Serve as the “gold standard” model of our curriculum that other tutors learn from.

Lead and support our tutor team

• Interview, onboard, and train new tutors.
• Observe, coach, and mentor tutors to ensure quality and consistency in every classroom.
• Be a positive, supportive leader who tutors enjoy working with and learning from.

Coordinate day-to-day operations

• Manage tutor scheduling, lesson delivery, and reporting.
• Troubleshoot the everyday challenges of running classes across multiple school sites.
• Be the friendly, reliable point of contact for school partners, tutors and parents.

What We’re Looking For

• Experience with teaching or working with children ages 3–8.
• A natural storyteller with strong classroom presence.
• Experience with leading or mentoring a team.
• Organized and comfortable with managing day-to-day administrative tasks.
• High-energy, positive, and aligned with our mission: making learning joyful, memorable, and impactful.
• Reliable transportation and willingness to travel between school sites across the Baltimore and Howard County areas as needed (including Towson, Timonium, Owings Mills, Columbia, Ellicott City).
• Familiarity with chess fundamentals is a bonus, but not essential.
