Job summary

Montgomery-Public-Schools is seeking a Lead Special Education Teacher to oversee instructional support and develop effective educational opportunities for students with disabilities. The role reports to the Superintendent and requires strong collaboration with district staff and families.

The candidate will lead SPED initiatives, ensure compliance with IEPs and state regulations, and coach teachers to raise achievement for diverse learners.

Qualifications

• Must hold an Alabama SPED certificate with endorsement.
• Minimum of 5 years of SPED teaching experience.
• Master’s degree in specific exceptionality or equivalent SPED graduate degree.
• Knowledge of strategies for academic and behavior interventions.

Responsibilities

• Develop and monitor individualized IEPs for students with disabilities.
• Train and support teacher assistants/paras working with students with disabilities.
• Coordinate special education services with district professionals and families.
• Monitor compliance with IEPs, progress reports, and state/federal requirements.

SUMMARY/GOAL OF POSITION

The provision of effective instructional support services which creates optimal educational opportunities for students that we serve.

QUALIFICATIONS

• Valid Alabama Teacher’s certificate with an endorsement in Special Education
• Minimum of (5) five years teaching experience in Special Education
• Master’s degree in specific exceptionality
• Experience in the full range of severity levels and service delivery modes
• Team leadership experience, preferably
• Knowledge of effective strategies for academic and behavior interventions
• Word processing/computer experience and knowledge of assistive technology devices for students with special needs.

ESSENTIAL TASK OF THE POSITION

• Assesses students’ needs and develops individualized Education Plans.
• Monitors and updates IEPs as needed.
• Trains and supports teacher assistants/paras for students with disabilities.
• Cooperates with other professionals to coordinate services for students.
• Assist teachers with the implementation of appropriate classroom accommodations and modifications.
• Assist individual students or teachers with the use of assistive technology and adaptive devices.
• Assist with coordination of the local school process for the identification and referral of students for special education services.
• Support building LEA in determining student accommodations, referral, eligibility, placement, and individual program development.
• Complies with local, state, and federal regulations regarding Special Education records, reports, and services.
• Cooperates with teachers, counselors, therapists, and other school personnel in the provision of effective educational services to students.
• Provides information, consultation, and assistance to regular classroom teachers, as needed.
• Maintains frequent and substantive communication with parents.
• Cooperates in all teacher regulations and responsibilities in the local school.
• Cooperates in all central office regulations and responsibilities.
• Monitor District and Special Education Platform; collects and analyzes reports, and data trends to ensure annual compliance (E.g., Evaluation, IEPs, Progress Monitoring, Student Rosters, etc.).
• Serve as an instructional coach to special education teachers modeling and providing feedback lesson plan feedback to help teachers develop and meet individual student IEP goals and academic growth.
• Monitor Special Education academic platforms and student and teacher usage of research-based supplemental resources.
• Conduct needed training for specific school teams or individuals.
• Provides data for tracking system for Special Education (E.g. Attendance, Supplemental Program usage, and State and Local Assessments, etc.)
• Follows the requisition process as it relates to making purchases with federal grants and local funds.
• Follows the Alabama Educator Code of Ethics.
• Coordinate and collaborate with related service personnel and monitors referrals, evaluations, and school-based services.
• Collaborates with the District Assessment Coordinator to ensure all students with disabilities receive accommodations as provided for by their IEP in local and state assessments.
• Attend all district-level Special Education professional development.
• Coordinates Special Education Transportation services.
• Attend approved teacher conferences or training related to the position to stay current with best practices and knowledge of Alabama federal and state regulations.
• Monitor the Extended School Year (ESY) program and services.
• Monitor year-end activities and ensure that teachers complete all required paperwork to meet compliance (E.g. Grades, IEP, Progress Monitoring, Special Programs, etc.).
• Monitor teachers and oversee that student records are current with up-to-date reports and documents that meet compliance.
• Monitor and oversees Special Education technology devices to ensure they are functioning properly (E.g., headphones, chrome books, carts, etc.).
• Provide briefings to the Superintendent regarding school data, teacher needs, and observations.
• Give input for needed departmental resources.
• Monitor teachers to ensure they are submitting lesson plans in accordance with their schools schedule.
• Monitor Job Coach and assess and ensure the program meets state requirements (E.g. Transition program marketing, job placements, job training, etc).
• Monitor teachers PLC attendance.
• Performs other duties as assigned by the Superintendent.
