National Grid is hiring a Lead Supervisor, Operations for our Outsourced Substation Construction department in New England.

Job Purpose

The Lead Supervisor, Operations, under the general direction of the OSC Manager will provide proactive leadership and direction to the electric substation construction contractors to ensure that high standards of safety, security, and environmental compliance are developed and consistently maintained.

Key Accountabilities
  • Work with the OSC Manager to drive consistent information flow across the team, lead, motivate, and develop Construction Supervisors, prioritize work, promote safe working practices and allocate resources to ensure results are delivered in line with expectations and customer/business objectives
  • Drive team performance through early involvement in projects while overseeing the operational workload of the team while monitoring environmental and other concerns to ensure efficient project delivery and timely internal stakeholder support
  • Interact and build relationships with key stakeholders (e.g., Project/Program Management, Construction Planning, Engineering, Procurement, Contractors, Operations and other participants) to ensure safe, timely, and correct project execution.
  • Ensure supervised teams and Contractors comply with safety standards, policies, and processes to ensure a safe working environment
  • Work closely with Internal Partners and Contractor stakeholders in early-stage project scope development with special attention to bid package assembly, construction means and methods, schedule, outage planning, and Health & Safety
  • Act as the Construction subject matter expert on the project team during the Contractor bid submission review process while guiding and mentoring Construction Supervisors.
  • Ensure that assigned personnel are properly directed, trained, licensed, and evaluated within Company guidelines and procedures
  • Monitor Contractor resource level, performance, and implementation plan progress for assigned projects to be certain that appropriate resource levels are being utilized
  • Understand upstream dependencies, facilitate construction schedules, and set priorities for the Construction Workforce to execute the work plan, evaluate/resolve planning and implementation issues, and ensure safe, timely and correct delivery of projects to stakeholders
  • Foster and manage Contractor relationships that encourage open/honest communication and drive safety, performance, quality, efficiency, customer service, issue resolution, and project success.
  • Supervise and ensure timely and correct submission of as-builts as part of project closeout activities
  • Maintain a thorough understanding of department emergency response procedures to help arrange and provide resource support as needed
  • Support weather related incidents including managing external Contractor Distribution Line crews during Emergency Storm restoration efforts
Qualifications
  • 5-10+ years of construction supervision experience, or bachelor's degree and/or certificate in Construction Management, Engineering, Engineering Technology required
  • Experience in Electric Substation construction techniques required
  • Experience in civil construction techniques, foundations, form work, conduit installation, excavation, trenching and shoring required
  • Experience in planning, scheduling, and executing projects. Specifically, ensuring safety, meeting timelines, and keeping projects on budget required
  • The ability to travel throughout the service territory and work extended hours and weekends as required on construction projects as well as for emergency or storm restoration events, as needed
  • Working knowledge in Microsoft Windows based applications (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, etc) required
  • Strong leadership, administrative, organizational, and communications skills
  • Self-motivating with the possibility of working independently, taking responsibility for work
  • Possession of a clean, valid state issued driver's license required
Capability Requirements
  • Strong background in Electric Utility Construction, labor-force Supervision, Construction Management
  • Knowledge of crane operations, material management, trucking, civil construction
  • Knowledge of federal, state, OSHA, local, and applicable environmental rules and regulations
  • The ability to understand construction field issues, prints specification sheets, schematics, one line diagrams, and instructional information to construct, maintain, and troubleshoot
  • A thorough understanding of electrical principles and the hazards associated with electrical work
  • Knowledge of applicable maintenance practices, safety requirements, and labor contracts
  • Strong negotiating skills
  • Understanding of Electric Operating Procedures, NG Substation Construction Standards, Environmental Best Management Practices (BMP's), Outage Coordination Timelines, and Electric Safety rules

Salary

$139,000-$163,000 a year
