Job summary

WSP USA is seeking a Lead Structural Engineer (Generation) to join the Power & Energy team in Houston, TX, with other locations considered. The role focuses on designing foundations and structures for solar, energy storage, and large power projects, and coordinating with drafters and clients.

Responsibilities

  • Design light and heavy foundations and structures for solar farms, battery storage, substations, generators, turbines, transformers, and pipe racks
  • Design structural steel systems for buildings, platforms, and equipment supports
  • Coordinate design work with drafters and designers
  • Interface with clients, regulatory agencies, and subcontractors and monitor construction progress
  • Travel to sites 5‑10% to verify conditions and support projects
  • Collaborate with engineers and authorities on regulated and funded projects
  • Uphold WSP safety policies and standards

Job Description

WSP is currently initiating a search for a Lead Structural Engineer (Generation) to join our Power & Energy team in Houston, TX. Other locations considered: Hailey, ID; Seattle, WA; Overland Park, KS; Atlanta, GA; Oradell, NJ; Mt. Laurel, NJ; and Boise, ID.

The candidate will be involved in projects with our Power Generation Team and will be a part of a growing organization that meets our client’s objectives and solves their challenges.

Your Impact
  • Design light foundations and structures for solar farms, battery energy storage facilities, and substation projects
  • Design heavy foundations and structures for large power generation projects: generators, turbines, transformers, pipe racks, gas compressors, metal building systems, and masonry walls/buildings.
  • Design structural steel systems for buildings, platforms, equipment supports, etc.
  • Coordinate design requirements with drafter/designers
  • Occasionally travel to clients and projects and sites to interface with clients, verify existing conditions, and monitor construction progress (5%-10% travel)
  • Interact with regulatory agencies, subcontractors, and clients in a confident and professional manner
  • Proactively collaborate with other engineers, professionals, and infrastructure authorities on federal, state, regional, local, and privately funded improvement and development projects, as well as proposal and business development opportunities.
  • Exercise responsible and ethical decision-making regarding company funds, resources, and conduct, and adhere to WSP’s Code of Conduct and related policies and procedures.
  • Perform additional responsibilities as required by business needs.
Who You Are
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Civil or Structural Engineering
  • 7+ years of relevant post‑education experience in engineering discipline and prior structural or civil design experience
  • PE license
  • Proficient with structural engineering principles, practices, process, and the application to project work‑related issues
  • Well‑defined specific knowledge of relevant structural and civil construction laws, codes, regulations, compliance practices, and record‑keeping requirements
  • Experience with power generation, transmission, and distribution projects
  • Highly effective interpersonal and communication skills when interacting with others, expressing ideas effectively and professionally to an engineering and non‑engineering audience
  • Demonstrated high‑level of self‑leadership with attention to detail, multi‑tasking, and prioritization of responsibilities in a dynamic work environment
  • Highly proficient with technical writing, office automation, discipline‑specific design software (i.e., MicroStation, AutoCAD, RISA, STADD), technology, math principles, physics, predictive models, spreadsheets, and tools
  • Well‑developed critical thinking and problem‑solving skills required to apply technical knowledge to reach conclusions from testing results, data collation, computations, statistical analysis and arriving at the most effective, economical, and logical solution
  • Demonstrated effectiveness at coordinating and assertively directing subcontractors and others to consistently complete tasks safely and efficiently
  • Knowledge of geotechnical engineering
  • Experience with pre‑engineered metal building systems
  • Experience with seismic analysis and design
  • Proven track record of upholding workplace safety and ability to abide by WSP’s health, safety and drug/alcohol and harassment policies
  • Ability to work schedules conducive to project‑specific requirements that may extend beyond the typical workweek
  • Occasional travel may be required depending on project‑specific requirements
  • Open to longer duration field assignments with the duration of 1 to 18 months

Compensation

Expected Salary (all locations): $98,300 - $175,230. WSP USA provides the compensation range that the company in good faith believes it might pay and offer for this position, based on the successful applicant’s education, experience, knowledge, skills, abilities, and internal equity and specific geographic location. WSP USA reserves the right to ultimately pay more or less than the posted range and offer additional benefits and other compensation, depending on circumstances not related to an applicant’s sex or other status protected by local, state, and/or federal law.
