Qualifications

Responsibilities

  • Ensure compliance with Joint Commission and hospital safety standards.
  • Assist with training of new staff and supervise shift tasks.
  • Maintain inventory and ensure prudent use of resources.
  • Follow Safety and Infection Prevention policies for staff, patients, and visitors.
  • Maintain knowledge of Sterile Processing functions and perform duties as assigned.
  • Implement department policies and collaborate with peers to achieve goals.
  • Engage in staff education and orientation for Sterile Processing Technicians.
  • Prepare and adjust shift work schedules to meet department needs.
  • Promote teamwork and effective communication across the department.

A Brief Overview

The Lead Sterile Processing Technician is responsible for the operations within the Sterile Processing Department of the Hospital. The Sterile Processing Lead Technician will oversee staff and assure policies and procedures are followed. The Lead serves as a liaison and resource for staff and customers regarding sterilization, processing of surgical instruments and surgical inventory/Case Cart management and storage. Participates in the departmental patient safety and performance improvement initiatives.

  • Must perform all duties and responsibilities in accordance with the Service Standards of the Hospital(s).
  • Assists with training of new staff.
  • Assures the prudent use of resources and efficiently maintains inventory.
  • Follows Hospital Safety and Infection Prevention policy and guidelines for self, patients, visitors and employees.
  • Has a working knowledge of all functions within the Sterile Processing Department and can perform all duties within the area assigned.
  • Implements the policy and procedures of the Sterile Processing Department and works collaboratively with peers and staff to achieve department goals.
  • Maintains professional self-development by participating in educational opportunities available both internally and externally.
  • Manages information utilizing appropriate manual or electronic systems for shift work activity. Reports any discrepancies or unusual activity to the Supervisor.
  • Monitors and assists Sterile Processing staff to ensure that all functions are carried out according to policies and procedures and compliance with applicable Federal, State and other regulatory agencies.
  • Participates in Hospital Departmental Committees and Task Forces as requested.
  • Participates with education training and orientation of Sterile Processing Technicians.
  • Practices time management. Maintains professional behavior and appearance.
  • Prepares assigned shift work schedule and makes changes as necessary to meet the needs of the department.
  • Promotes a positive work environment by practicing good communication, diversity awareness and teamwork.
  • Provides input for the performance evaluations of assigned staff and may initiate corrective actions.
Education Qualifications
  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent
Experience Qualifications
  • Two (2) years of progressively responsible and directly related work experience
Required Knowledge, Skills And Abilities
  • Ability to clean, sterilize, assemble, and store medical supplies and equipment according to established standards and procedures
  • Ability to effectively prioritize work and meet deadlines in a fast paced environment
  • Ability to establish and maintain respectful relationships with a diverse population
  • Ability to follow policies and procedures regarding all aspects of an assignment including basic arithmetic and inventory calculations
  • Ability to perform work-lead responsibilities such as training and orienting new employees, assigning and reviewing work for completeness and accuracy, scheduling work, and other coordinating and support duties for a supervisor/manager
  • Ability to speak, read, write, and understand English effectively at a level appropriate for the job
  • Knowledge of and experience with surgical instrumentation, sterilization practices, and surgical supplies and case cart assembly
  • Knowledge of basic medical terminology; sterilization methods and equipment, supply distribution, storage and inventory control
  • Knowledge of surgical instrument processing, including the assembly of complex surgical instrument sets in all services
  • Knowledge of surgical supplies, Case Cart assembly, and core activities
  • Knowledge of the organization, functions, operations, policies and procedures of the Sterile Processing Department
Licenses and Certifications
  • CRCST - Certified Registered Central Service Technician . or
  • CSPDT - Sterile Process/Dist Tech .
