Job summary

Rice University is seeking a Stationary Engineer, Plant Operator (First Grade) to operate Rice University’s central plants and utility infrastructure, monitor Building Automation Systems, and respond to emergencies with safety and regulatory compliance.

The ideal candidate holds a First Grade Stationary Engineer’s License (or reciprocity) with proven experience running boilers, turbines, control rooms, and central plant utility systems.

Qualifications

• High School Diploma or equivalent.
• 4+ years of central plant operations experience, including operating high-pressure steam boilers.
• Current City of Houston First Grade Stationary Engineer’s License or ability to acquire within 6 months of hire.
• Reciprocal license eligibility from another municipality; examination may be required.

Responsibilities

• Operate plant equipment (boilers, turbines, chillers, pumps) to meet campus load and schedule.
• Monitor plant and campus auxiliary equipment and respond to issues.
• Lead shift operations and direct second operators.
• Log events and enter work orders in CMMS.
• Maintain safety and regulatory compliance at all times.
• Perform routine maintenance and lubrication as needed.
