Job summary

Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory (APL) is seeking a Mechanical Engineer to join our team designing and delivering spaceflight hardware for civil space exploration and national security missions.

You will work with systems, mechanical, thermal, and manufacturing engineers to ensure mission requirements are met, manage mass budgets, interfaces, and schedules, and prepare for launch and on-orbit operations.

Qualifications

  • BS in Aerospace or Mechanical Engineering.
  • 5+ years of experience leading space mission projects.
  • Experience leading a major flight subsystem through concept, design, test and integration.
  • Experience managing schedules and reporting progress across teams.
  • Proven ability to work across hardware disciplines and organizations.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Willingness to travel to suppliers and sponsors and to work variable schedules during testing.
  • U.S. citizenship and ability to obtain a Secret or Top Secret clearance.

Responsibilities

  • Be responsible for the capability and consistency of the mechanical systems across the mission.
  • Be intimately involved in the integration and organization of flight systems across mechanical, thermal, system engineering and electrical domains.
  • Manage the development of interfaces, schedules and budgets, and provide mechanical systems engineering oversight.
  • Be responsible for mass budgets across all elements of the systems.
  • Provide inputs to program-level risks and mitigations and manage data flows across organizations.
  • Contribute to launch, cruise and flight operations planning on Titan and other missions.
